Yorkshire over-60s in title triumph
4:56pm Friday 8th March 2013 in Sport By Sports Desk
Yorkshire Veterans picked up their second table tennis title of the season as the over-60s first team followed in the footsteps of the over-40s by winning the Premier Division after the last round of matches in Milton Keynes.
Yorkshire were two points ahead of defending champions Essex but had played one match more and it was likely that sets average would be decisive.
Essex won their match in hand 6-4 against Kent so, with one match left, Yorkshire had a slender one set advantage and only needed to equal the result of Essex to take the crown.
The Yorkshire quartet of Steve Kosmowsky, Doug Bartle, Fred Yeung and Sandra Rider rose to the occasion and triumphed 8-2 in their clash with Kent and, with Essex only managing a 7-3 success against Sussex, the title was in Yorkshire’s hands by just two sets.
Meanwhile, Hermits A have moved up to third in Division Two of the Bradford League following two excellent results against the top two.
Ian Warner was the Hermits’ inspiration with three singles as they won 7-3 against Fastbats A and he also took three against leaders Unity D.
The leaders had won nine successive home games but Warner’s treble and two from Pete Johnson ensured Hermits gained a deserved draw.
