Carl McHugh getting it right on the left for Bradford City

Carl McHugh, left, showed his improvement at left back against Port Vale this week
Carl McHugh is getting to grips with left back – just ask Jennison Myrie-Williams.
The Port Vale winger led the Irish teenager on a merry dance when City went to Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in December.
But when they met again three months later in midweek, it was McHugh who had his opponent on a tight leash.
McHugh said: “The last time was a tough outing and I got a bit of a stick about it from my housemates. But I think the other night showed my improvement since then.
“You learn a lot as a young player, especially with the tough games we’ve been involved in, and I feel a bit more comfortable playing there now.”
McHugh will persist with the full-back role at least until James Meredith comes back into the fray. The Australian is being fast-tracked as much as possible after his glandular fever but his replacement’s current form is a welcome bonus.
He said: “It’s completely different to centre half and I’m a bit more natural in the middle. But I’m just delighted to be playing anywhere I can in the team and I’ll try to do my best whatever position.
“It was harder earlier in the season when I just got put in there for a few games. Now I’m getting a bit more comfortable in it and felt on Tuesday that I’d improved on the Saturday.
“A clean sheet away from home is the best feeling in football for a defender. The concentration was really good right to the final whistle.
“We’ve got to keep doing that because we have enough going forward to help us win games.”
McHugh expects a very different encounter at Valley Parade tomorrow but is confident they can unlock Aldershot.
“Most teams come here and sit back but since Wembley all three performances have been encouraging.
“The goals will come. There are plenty of games left and we’re not miles away.”
