YORK 0 CITY 2
Second half goals from James Hanson and sub Garry Thompson clinched a crucial derby win at York this afternoon.
The Bantams got the three points they urgently needed to launch their late-season push with a controlled display at a packed Bootham Crescent.
Phil Parkinson made another five changes from midweek with Nathan Doyle rested in midfield to give Ricky Ravenhill an outing.
The club captain was in his element in an uncompromising first half not helped by the bobbly surface.
There were too many free-kicks to make it a flowing spectacle but York had the closest sight of goal six minutes before the break. Jason Walker eluded Jon McLaughlin but Carl McHugh, playing at left back, was covering to make a comfortable block in front of the goalline.
City looked brighter at the start of the second and James Hanson’s flick header was saved low down by Michael Ingham.
Walker fired over for York and McLaughlin was equal to a dipping effort from Matty Blair.
Zavon Hines had found himself back on the bench but came on for the final quarter as City went at York with both wingers. On the other flank, Reid immediately tested Ingham with a 25-yard crack.
Andrew Davies then met the corner with a header that flew straight at the relieved keeper.
But City made the vital breakthrough when Hanson’s header squirmed through Ingham’s grasp for his tenth goal of the season.
And Thompson, who had come on for Wells, made sure with an emphatic finish from Ravenhill’s ball over the top.
4:49pm
Ugly foul by Smith on Hines. Rightly sees yellow - could have been worse.
4:43pm
THOMPSON 2-0. Ravenhill long ball misjudged by O'Connell and he finishes it coolly.
4:41pm
York make double change. On comes Lee Bullock as well as Michael Rankine.
4:39pm
Ingham has another flap at Jones corner but gets lucky with nobody there to pounce.
4:37pm
Crowd is 5,678 with over 2,000 of those behind the away goal
4:35pm
City corner. Need to keep pushing for another goal - remember Wimbledon.
4:33pm
HANSON 1-0 City. Darby cross and striker's header squirms past Ingham at near post, 76min
4:32pm
McHugh tries a cheeky shot rather than cross but it's not fooling Ingham.
4:28pm
Good spell for City. Reid shot tipped behind for corner which Davies meets with a firm header - but straight at the keeper. A foot either side and City would be ahead.
4:25pm
Best shot of the game by Blair but McLaughlin is equal to his dipping effort and turns behind for corner.
4:24pm
Hines replaces Atkinson, who has worked hard but not much come off for him. York bring on McDaid for Chambers, 66min.
4:22pm
Smith gets his head on it but cannot direct his effort.
4:22pm
York clear and break quickly to force one of their own.
4:21pm
Corner for City again, their third.
4:19pm
Game opening up more at both ends. It needs to.
4:15pm
Blair causes problems on City's left but Nelson takes the sting of cross allowing easy catch for McLaughlin.
4:11pm
Thompson coming on for Wells, 55min
4:11pm
York respond with Walker just over the bar after some neat passing inside City box.
4:11pm
Good play from Atkinson and Wells sets up City counter. Darby cross glanced goalwards by Hanson and keeper saves low down.
4:09pm
Wells coming in for some physical treatment but referee sees nothing wrong with the challenges.
4:04pm
City corner. Jones kick cleared out to edge of box where Atkinson volleys wide.
4:03pm
City quick free-kick to Reid catches York asleep. Wingers cuts inside and shoots - unfortunately it's a wayward effort into the rammed away end.
4:01pm
City get the second half underway.
3:47pm
And McLaughlin makes important save at near post from Walker's header before ref blows for break. Half-time 0-0
3:46pm
York win corner with just about enough time to take it.
3:45pm
One minute of added time to play.
3:44pm
Rodman breaks again to find unmarked McGrath in box. He completely scuffs shot sideways which turns into good pass for Blair but Davies and McHugh combine to block his shot.
3:43pm
Reid finds room to drill in low cross but Wells miscontrols. York now break through Rodman and Nelson is first across with an important clearance.
3:39pm
Kerr goes into Andy D'Urso's book for late challenge.
3:38pm
Chambers turn creates danger for City. McLaughlin comes out of his goal to try to cut off Walker whose shot from narrow angle is cleared in front of line by McHugh.
3:34pm
No pattern to the game. Football not helped by the bobbly pitch.

3:28pm
City clear it out and then McLaughlin comfortably takes cross.
3:27pm
Now it's a York free-kick in similar position. Good curling ball in from Walker which Davies puts behind for a home corner.
3:26pm
Ingham does well to claw it away in crowded goalmouth.
3:26pm
Hanson fouled by touchline gives City chance to turn up pressure in box. Reid's lofted free-kick fumbled by Ingham with Hanson closing in and it's a City corner.
3:25pm
Hanson fouled by touchline gives City chance to turn up pressure in box. Reid's lofted free-kick fumbled by Ingham with Hanson closing in and it's a City corner.
3:20pm
Atkinson and McGrath have a bit of a spat after the ball is gone. D'Urso lets them off with a warning.
3:20pm
Atkinson and McGrath have a bit of a spat after the ball is gone. D'Urso lets them off with a warning.
3:17pm
Blair looks to burst through but touch is too heavy and City escape potentially very dangerous position.
3:16pm
Good skill from Chambers to cut inside Darby but his shot lacks power.
3:15pm
Smith concedes free-kick 30 yards out. Jones connects well but Ingham saves low down.
3:15pm
McLaughlin's first action in City goal is to gather a long-range daisy cutter from right bank Oyebanjo.
3:13pm
Jones busy as ever covering everything in midfield.
3:11pm
Strong tackle from Jones on halfway wins possession and Reid tries ambitious shot from distance. Ball takes a deflection but Ingham holds it carefully.
3:10pm
York struggle to deal with Darby long throw and Wells almost nips in to get on end in six-yard box.
3:09pm
Apologies for the slow updates, signal keeps cutting out unfortunately.
York started the brighter but nothing to report at either end so far.
3:03pm
Home fans launch chorus of "We WON at Wembley"!
3:02pm
Good take from York keeper Ingham in the sun from Atkinson's lofted cross.
3:02pm
Purely because of the universal condemnation of his selection, I'm calling Ravenhill to score/set up the winner. Bobby Petta style. #bcafc

Good spot those who noticed Blair Turgott playing for West Ham against Man United in the FA Youth Cup last night. Clearly means his loan is not being renewed.
2:23pm
Lee Bullock is on the York bench again, even though his future at the club looks uncertain.
He went to Gateshead on loan and there was talk of making it permanent but he boss Gary Mills was not keen to let him go again.
Former Bantam Scott Kerr, who occupies the midfield holding role that Bullock would fill, leads a side who have not won in ten games since New Year's Day.
YORK: Ingham, Oyebanjo, Smith, Parslow, Kerr, Walker, Chambers, Blair, O'Connell, McGrath, Rodman. Subs: Bullock, McDaid, Potts, Doig, Rankine, P McLaughlin, Musselwhite.
2:16pm
Right, we'd all have picked a different starting 11 but don't get paid for it. So let's do our job, support the team and the pucker. #bcafc

2:08pm
After six changes in midweek there are five today at York.
Jon McLaughlin retains his place in goal but there is a switch at the back where Carl McHugh returns at left back. That allows Stephen Derby to go back on the right.
Will Atkinson replaces Zavon Hines, arguably the best player against Dagenham, at right midfield. Nathan Doyle is given a breather in the middle where Ricky Ravenhill gets a start.
And up front there is a return for James Hanson, following his late equaliser on Wednesday, and top scorer Nahki Wells.
CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, Nelson, Davies, McHugh, Atkinson, Ravenhill, Jones, Reid, Wells, Hanson. Subs: Thomson, Connell, Doyle, Hines, McArdle, Gray, Duke.
1:58pm

Doyle has been quiet so this may wake him up BUT ravenhill does nothing more than tackle for me and Jones and Doyle can do this. It shows the mistake imo of not finding a creative centre-forwrd mid player/attacking midfielder to replace Syers.
Nelson has done nothing wrong but neither has McCardle whom i just prefer. But perhaps this is due to the recent injury.
Apart from Hanson,Wells, Ravenhill and Jonny mac (enforced) they are all players Parky has brought in and must start to show why......
We need to attack and be positive as far too many games and points have been allowed to go imo due to the cautious attitude/set-up. How many protective players do we need? A tleast get the wide players 'bombing'on knowing there is this protection. However this is not Atkinsons game so we have to hope Reidy is better than on Wednesday.....
go for it......

We set up to match them and it wasn't untill the subs came on that we did anything positive.
I can only base this opnion on what Tim and Sticks were saying. And they were describing and moaning about the performance untill the goal went in. Basically saying we were too narrow and defensively minded. No shots supports first half supports this.
We badly badly needed this win but there is a long way to go. I admit i was down for the first hour. We need win not draws and we have alot of better teams than York to play yet. Sounds like they messed up and our set-up/tactics as worked this time but i i have justified and legitimate concerns that our cautiousness will be our undoing. We are better than teams like this so don't match them 'destroy' them.
Its actually a positive thing to want. And yes i am obviously very happy with the three points. 8 more wins approx required though.......then i'll be even happier.....

its hardly jumping the gun. I didn't make any predictions. didn't say we would lose. did state that we weren't creating anything FACT. other than hoping we would change things and be positive which i believe all city fans would have been wanting/hoping for, where's the joke?. I can't help feeling that the chopping and changing is not helping. I can't understand why an in form player (Thompson) was left out as part of a rotation policy. Naturally, he comes on and ...hey presto -scores! No right winger for most of the game. What must Connell think when, he rarely gets a start, but sees a dire performer from Wednesday keep his place.
I don't care what PP says, in this league you play your in form players and build up an understanding by keeping a settled side.

Poor game. You could see why York have won twice at home since november - they were poor, confidence in front of goal was shocking and their fans barely made a noise.
We had more possession and you knew we were better, but we resorted to long balls which were wasted. Apart from a small flurry for York in first half it was devoid of any quality.
Second half started a bit similar but gradually started to open up. Reid didn't have a great first hour and we totally lacked width we were crying out for. Thomson and Hines came on and we started to look brighter, but final ball and bit of quality was still lacking.
Hansons header was a bit scrappy but great play in the build up from Hines and Derby, the latter putting in a brilliant cross. Thompsons was an excellent finish as well.
Funny how we battered Morecambe and Barnet and got nothing, while today in a game with barely any quality we won 2-0. We all know wins are wins, but until the 77th minute it was a very poor game and we looked like a mid-table team, York a lower-table one.

Second half started in much the same vein but forced subs (Thommo on for injured? Nahki) & Hines on for thre largely ineffectual Atkinson changed the game.
Terrific bit of skill to beat his man and a ball whipped in with purpose & pace met superbly by Hanson.
Break-away ball over the top put Thompson clean through who did well to finish when one on one.
Great support and banter with the locals, but more importantly 3 points.

Reid had a really quiet game for the first 70 minutes and then seem to come to life....don't know if the York players fitness was lacking.....With Hines then coming on we seemed to start playing and the game was opening up.
Wasn't a flowing game......but it was a must win game and we did what was needed to get the three points.
What's worrying me is the constant rotation of the team. Nakhi Wells was off the pace today and didn't look up for it.
Tommo for me played really well.... along with Ravenhill also playing well. My man of the match was Jones. The man is a machine. He was everywhere... I have really been impressed with him and here's hoping he can carry this form on right until the end of the season.
We just need the rest of the lads now to be consistant. Special mention for the lad Darby.... he put in some excellent crosses.
All in all not the best performace in terms of flowing football....but there was plenty of heart and battle.
Also big mention to all the support there today was superb and a good atmosphere.

Even allowing for a Wembley hangover our last two performances against two teams in dire form and struggling in the bottom half of League 2 have been nothing short of abysmal. It was so bad I don't think we had a shot worthy of the name in the first half. It really was painful to watch.
Given the fact we played some really nice football for a couple of months at the start of the season and it was a pleasure and no longer a chore visiting VP, I can only assume our recent cup run has impacted negatively on our season and as a fan I'd sure as hell love to know why?

You could tell at 0-0 there was an air from the fans of we just aren't good enough to go up. We've in the final stage of the season and in our position and points gap if you don't close it now then thats it.
We'd created very little and hadn't forced much pressure against a poor team whos own fans weren't backing them. The nature of the win has given us some hope for an extremely difficult game on Tuesday. Anything other than a loss would be a bonus.

I feel Hanson and Connell together would cause a lot of problems for centre halves with Thompson to come on for either as the game progresses.
Either Wells is carrying an injury or he has lost interest which will give himself n chance of a big move any time soon.
Having said he should be starting games I am getting concerned at his situation and maybe he should be completely rested for a few weeks to see if he can get his attitude and any niggle injury corrected. Remember he did take a whack against Swansea early on.

just watched the goals again: Hanson had a free header from a great cross and would have not scored had it not been inept keeping. He really must learn to be more clinical in these situations. THAT FREE HEADER SHOULD HAVE BEEN BURIED.

The biggest concerns are why form players are dropped, ie Thompson and Hines whilst under performing or out of form players such as Reid and Wells get a start. We don't. Have time to play players into form we must surely start with the form players. I was disappointed with Thompson's early season form but no one can deny he is on it at the moment. At least no points were lost yesterday and we can all dream a little longer.

Very relieved we got the win. I listened on the Pulse and feared York may have grabbed one at 0-0. We were evidently dire in the first half,
I can't help feeling that the chopping and changing is not helping.
Yes, I'm delighted at the win but can't help feeling it's papered over the cracks.
Now lonnies "come alive", he'll be wanting a detailed explanation of my comments!
When you've an out of form man on the left and Atkinson on the right, you've very little options out wide.
Interesting to note we only came alive when Hines and Thompson came on. PP's team selection perplexes me.
If I were to find a place for Atkinson, it would be as a backup for Jones/Doyle. He came as a winger. Have you ever seen him cross a ball? A detailed explanation of the game and time please, lonnie. You'll be struggling!

I could not agree more BCFC 1903. A few weeks ago, people knock Hanson all the time, now 2 valuable goals in 2 games. Then it's been we had 20 shots and we can't score....today it's we won but we did not turn on the style.
How about Northampton got stuffed so they must be crap?! Some results went our way? We kept a clean sheet?
C'mon City!

If we were marginally better than very poor, we were poor, not good.
Unbelievable comment.

Why not let our good defenders defend? We seem to invite teams to pressure us or allow them to sit comfortably at times. Two central midfielders have mostly operated between our box and the half way line.
In the last home game Jones noticeably attempted to get in or near the box more and thats what we need. E.g. more bodies in goal scoring positions, feeding from knock downs, forcing defensive mistakes etc.
Playing Atkinson out wide, whilst he is good at holding the ball and disciplined defensively is a defensive first strategy. He rarely beats a player and crosses the ball and plays very narrow at times. This leaves us with one wide outlet.
It wouldn't be so bad if the full backs were over-lapping but that is also a rarity and seemingly privilege....
I'll be honest i still haven't gotten over our wembley no-show and am desperate for us to get back there and wipe away the football memories. Dint expect to win but thought we might have had two shots at least ;-)......Thats why i'm keen for us to get at teams. At least this way you know you gave it everything and i feel that we would gain more points this way, especially for home games where we have let ourselves down recently.......

You also raise my point as to whetehr we should be looking to counter a team like York with their resources compared to ours. Our wage bill will dwarf theirs by comparison (in relative football terms). We should be expecting to beat these cos we are better at football not looking to counter-act them.
This is exactly the point for me. Its safety first. Well safety first won't get us the wins we need imo. There were signs against Daggrs that Parky realised the need to be more attacking and i hope that will be the case for home games with a safer attitude away.
If you want and deserve to go up you must be looking to beat the likes of York home and away and indeed the wimbledons etc and not looking to not get beat which we have for alot of games this season. It won't be enough. Parky has said from the beginning the aim is to go up, well its gonna take an automatic promotion like run to secure this now......
