Rihards Sulcs lands last-gasp Bradford Dragons winner
Bradford Dragons had a mixed weekend as they followed up a tense derby victory over Leeds Carnegie with a high-scoring defeat at Tees Valley Mohawks.
The 58-56 win against Leeds was secured with less than a second left on the clock as Rihards Sulcs netted the decisive points.
The opening quarter was close and finished level at 15-15, before Leeds opened a three-point lead to take into the half-time break.
The third period was another 15-15 affair and the fourth saw Bradford awarded possession with 10.1 seconds to go as they searched for the score that would clinch the win.
Michael Gayle’s shot with two seconds left hit the ring but Sulcs collected the rebound before finding the target.
Vance Silcott top-scored with 14 points and Dragons head coach Chris Mellor said: “It was a tough battle right to the end and fortunately we made the big plays in the last two minutes.”
Sunday saw Bradford up against a Tees Valley side who had lost the National Trophy final the previous night and the hosts had the better of a far more offensive contest than the Dragons’ clash with Leeds.
It finished 110-95 in favour of the Mohawks as Bradford’s scoring was led by Ricky Fetske with 20 points.
Bradford’s second team lost 85-55 to Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights, the under-18s were beaten 95-81 by Gateshead Tornadoes and the under-16s slipped up 95-51 against Killamarsh Derbyshire Arrows. But the under-14s won 103-43 against Leeds.
