Brighouse blow sees summit hopes fade
8:16pm Sunday 17th February 2013 in Sport By Ian Whiting
Brighouse Town missed an opportunity to go top of the Baris Northern Counties East Premier Division in midweek due to postponement and their next chance could be a long time coming following a disappointing weekend.
It went pear-shaped for Town as they lost 2-1 at home while their two title rivals both enjoyed victories. Mid-table Retford United took an early lead at the Dual Seal Stadium following Bobby Johnson’s sixth-minute opener.
Sam Hewitt struck an equaliser just minutes into the second half but a stoppage-time goal from Craig Fisher saw the visitors take all three points.
Bridlington Town won 3-0 at Armthorpe to leapfrog Paul Quinn’s men into second place, while leaders Scarborough Athletic walloped Long Eaton 7-1.
Thackley and Liversedge both earned 2-2 draws on the road.
Thackley stayed in the top eight thanks to their point at Barton Town Old Boys but they felt they had done enough to win. However, the Dennyboys failed to convert enough of their chances.
Mark Bett put them in front in the 19th minute and again just after the half-hour, following Simon Spencer’s equaliser, but Spencer was also on target in the second half to seal a draw.
Chris Hirst bagged a brace for Liversedge at Glasshoughton before goals on 75 and 89 minutes from Greig McGory earned the home side a point.
