BRADFORD CITY 0 GILLINGHAM 1
City slipped further behind the promotion pack after suffering a third successive league home loss against Gillingham.
While Wembley gets closer, the Bantams continue to stutter in League Two and have now picked up only two points from six games.
City were the better team in a first half of few chances. Gillingham, the away-day specialists, hardly got out of first gear.
The only real threat on goal came after 37 minutes. Stuart Nelson parried Gary Jones’ shot straight back out but then made up for it with a superb tip-over to deny Nahki Wells from the follow-up.
Gillingham stepped it up after the break and made the breakthrough after 64 minutes. It was a bad goal to concede for the home side as Matt Duke dithered coming for Deon Burton’s ball over the top, allowing Cody McDonald to nip round him and steer into the empty net.
Chris Whelpdale was inches away from a second before James Hanson missed a golden chance to level, powering a header wide from Kyel Reid’s inviting cross.
Duke came forward for a couple of late corners but Gillingham comfortably saw off the storm to clinch their tenth win on the road.
4:55pm
Throw-in right by corner flag.... but no time to take it. City lose 1-0 and suffer third home league defeat in a row.
4:54pm
Kop hide disappointment at imminent defeat with chorus of Wembley.
4:54pm
Wells falls down in box but nobody seriously looks for a penalty.
4:53pm
Gillingham get it away and Duke is way out. Weston has a pop at empty net from 40 yards but misses by a long way.
4:53pm
Another City corner and Duke still up there in the box.
4:52pm
Wells free-kick deflected off wall and City win corner. Duke's up for it!
4:50pm
Connel nudged over by Legge inside the Gillingham D. Chance for City...
4:50pm
Wells runs into a cul-de-sac and another opportunity is gone.
4:49pm
Four minutes of added time to salvage something.
4:49pm
Dickson combining neatly with Reid on left but quality of crosses has let City down most of game.
4:45pm
poor poor league form from city. #byebyepromotion #bcafc
— @williamfstead 09 February 2013
4:45pm
Burton cuts inside Good but drives over the bar.
4:44pm
#bcafc we need to start winning in the league. Cup run is great but we need to turn it to winning points!
— @mattlumsdenBCFC 09 February 2013
4:43pm
But it was hardly worth bothering with as short corner ends in a City throw.
4:43pm
And a third ...
4:43pm
And they get another ...
4:42pm
Gillingham win their first corner of the game after Reid lets Lee get past him far too easily.
4:40pm
Alan Connell comes on for Naylor with ten minutes left.
4:39pm
Another fan bites the dust, this time from the Kop.
4:38pm
Gillingham make their second sub replacing scorer McDonald with Lee.
4:36pm
Big chance! Reid cross is right on the money for Hanson but as VP prepares to celebrate, the big man's header crashes wide.
4:33pm
Obviously that means Dickson to left back instead of Good and Thompson wide on the right
4:32pm
Double sub from City. Thompson for Good, Dickson for Hines.
4:30pm
Feel like just crying #bcafc

4:29pm
Whelpdale inches away from Gillingham second. Shot blocked by Nelson, ball sits up for him again and he drives rebound just wide of far post.
4:28pm
Jones corner comes back to him but he puts his cross straight into hands of keeper.
4:27pm
City respond with a corner. Need better delivery with this one.
4:25pm
Crowd is 10,887 with 327 from Gillingham, who are celebrating the prospect of a tenth away win.
4:23pm
1-0 to Gillingham. Long ball, Duke didn't come until too late, McDONALD takes it past him and knocks into empty net.
4:20pm
Darby tries his luck from "Burton" distance but flies wide into the Kop.
4:19pm
Crowd comes to life as City win a fifth corner. Reid's kick once again cleared by Legge.
4:18pm
Duke goal kick bounces right through for Wells but his shot is straight into the ground.
4:16pm
Gillingham showing more ambition since half-time.
4:14pm
Allen fails to recover from earlier knock and is replaced by Weston, who scored a good goal against City on opening day.
4:14pm
Confident run from Naylor to push deep into Gills territory. Reid down in a heap but ref unimpressed.
4:11pm
Whelpdale low shot through crowd of players saved by Duke. At other end, Hanson's glancing header from Wells cross lacks the power to trouble Nelson.
4:09pm
Burton lines up 30 yard free-kick but rattles it wide. No threat to Duke.
4:07pm
He's able to continue and the game restarts.
4:06pm
Play stops for a couple of minutes while Allen, the manager's son, receives treatment.
3:48pm
Last chance for City before half-time. Reid swings free-kick into box but Gills clear away again. 0-0 at the break.
3:46pm
Reid's low cross hits Barrett on backside in six-yard box but Hanson not close enough to get onto loose ball.
3:45pm
Hanson forces hurried clearance from Legge but Reid's shot is awful.
3:43pm
Martin Allen appeals to the fourth official as Legge goes down from Hanson push in box. Nobody else is impressed.
3:39pm
Andrew Davies comes out to warm up and greeted by loud applause and song from the Kop.
3:39pm
City claim for push on Hanson from corner but nothing is given. Good spell from the hosts.
3:38pm
Ball drops for Jones snap shot but Legge sticks out leg to block.
Jones shoots again, parried by Nelson who then tips Wells follow-up over bar. Excellent save
3:35pm
Hanson flick on drops to Wells but his shot on the turn clears roof of TL Dallas stand.
3:35pm
Reid powers past Fish and Allen but cross is too deep. City trying to play it around.
3:32pm
Gills fan being physically ejected by half a dozen stewards. Seems very reluctant to leave.
3:27pm
Hanson heads over bar, 26min.
3:27pm
Robinson flattens Hines but no action taken.
3:27pm
Good block from Nelson to charge down shot by Whelpdale.

3:26pm
Crowd launch rousing chorus of Parkinson's Bradford army.
3:24pm
Gillingham not really settled into game. No chances to speak of so far but Parkinson will be happy with way things are going.
3:17pm
Martin Allen his usual animated self on the touchline. Doesn't look happy with his team's start.
3:16pm
Reid overhits it though and Robinson heads away from danger.
3:16pm
Another corner for City, their third of game with 14 min gone.
3:11pm
Another corner for City as Hines shot turned behind by Frampton. Gills clear but bright start from home side.
3:10pm
Duke fields McDonald shot from distance.
3:08pm
Hanson does well to cut ball back from byline, Wells helps on to Jones but shot smothered by Gills bodies.
3:04pm
Gonna be a tough one, but we do need to win this to stand a good chance of promotion come the end of the season #bcafc
— @xnicholastx 09 February 2013
3:04pm
Important tackle from Gills skipper Adam Barrett thwarts Hanson as he looks to get on end of Reid long pass.
3:03pm
Reid corner whizzes across goal mouth but nobody gets a touch.
3:03pm
Hanson wins flick on and Hines nips in behind to win City corner after less than minute.
2:59pm
Naylor's loan is up after this afternoon's game. Could be his final outing for City.
2:59pm
Teams are out and right on cue the Wembley song begins
2:29pm
Great to see Davies back in the squad. They all want to be fit for Wembley. #bcafc

Never in my life did I think I'd see 30 fellas in the centre of Bradford pushing #bcafc cup final scarves. All rubbish but still, surreal.

2:00pm
There are some surprises in the City line-up this afternoon to take on away specialists Gillingham.
Phil Parkinson has made four changes from the side that started last week's 2-2 draw at Fleetwood.
Both wingers Kyel Reid and Zavon Hines start while Curtis Good comes in at left back and Tom Naylor at centre half.
Carl McHugh is not included in the squad so presumably has a knock after making his Republic of Ireland under-21 debut on Wednesday.
But there is a return to the bench for Andrew Davies, his first involvement since the injury at Burton in October. He only started full training again on Monday.
CITY: Duke, Darby, Nelson, Naylor, Good, Hines, Doyle, Jones, Reid, Wells, Hanson. Subs: Davies, Gray, Thompson, Atkinson, Connell, Dickson, McLaughlin.
1:35pm
Gillingham have lost only once away all season. But they haven't won a game when they've conceded the first goal.

Still the run of results in the league since end of October has been truly shocking. We have not been convincing probably since that Northampton away win - worse home record than last season already with number of losses!
PP is struggling - I guess Gills played 4-5-1 and we just cant cope and never have done against such a set up.
Really dont know what to do as I cant see this side going on next year to easily win promotion.
Jones & Doyle just too defensive, Reid & hines just too inconsistent.
Wembley is great but Division 4 a certainty next season.

It's inexplicable but, for some reason, major cup runs from minnows, and good league form, just don't go together.
I wrote off promotion several weeks ago so will enjoy the final which, in itself, will make this season memorable
Good point above re midfield being too defensive. Missing a Dave Syers type.

Another smash and grab like the Port Vale match at home but points are all that matter and City are in grave danger of missing the cut unless something changes soon. 2 losses on the bounce at home. 2 points in last 18 and now in 12th place 6 pts off last playoff place. It may be too late once Wembley is over. 2 victories away from home before Wembley is a must!!!

Its only our good home form until January that was keeping us around the play-offs - the away form was that of a mid-table team. The danger is becoming reality - the home form has really nosedived and we are dropping down the table.
I genuinely think we didn't strengthen enough in the transfer window to give us the spark needed to actually hit the net.

3 of the top 4 teams have beaten us at VP, all with clinical 1-0 wins. In contrast, in those games we've never looked like breaking the opposition down.

We've scored 40 goals in the league but nobody except Wells has got into double figures. That stat is what I think will cost us come the end of the season. We brought in enough bodies in January but I think we made some poor choices.

Its like I said though, they, PV and Exeter have one chance and bang, game over. Thats why they're up there - how many results like that have we had?
We outplayed Gills today in the first half, but not the second. Aside from that glaring miss and the late few corners, we did nothing at all to get the keepers knees dirty.
Agree about the transfer dealings - we need that attacking midfielder like Syers (or even McCall when he got forward) who knew when to get up there and for example find a position to hit a shot or pick up a rebound or second phase ball. Jones and Doyle don't do enough in that attacking sense - they look out wide far too often for passes and never drive into the box.
Missing on Kennedy was a big blow but we must get someone in on loan - we've gone from 4th to 14th in about 6 weeks.

The Bantams did okay in the first half, but fell short in the second. Some players who've done well for us in recent past didn't show and another 3 pts was lost. Pity, because a lot of extra fans turned up on the back of Cup success.
If it's the Cup Final and nothing else this season, I for one won't complain though. We HAVE got a decent side and, if we keep them together eithr this season or next..we WILL get out of this league.

Can't believe how negative some fans become, yes results have been disappointing however despite all these dropped points we still can make the play offs, agree we need goals from other areas and I'm sure parky will be working on sorting this out, and if it means bringing in a loan player so be it, parky has never made excuses about injuries however we have had more than our fair share and still managed to keep up a challenge on the cup fronts and the league until recently, lets keep believing in promotion because it is still within our reach
Our pre-xmas home form was the only thing keeping us up there as the away form was that of a mid-table team. Now the home form is on its arse we're really up against it.
Its becoming a repeat of SMCs second season collapse unless things change fast.
Theres 15 games left. We are in big danger of running out of games to catch up - we are effectively 3 wins away in terms of the gap and.

If PP does not get some new goal scoring blood in on loan soon, we are in big trouble!
There is absolutely no way that 7 teams in this division are better than us, so it would be a real travesty if we don't finish top 7!

We then compound that with momentary lapses in concentration, which leads us to concede some incredibly soft goals, as was once again evidenced today.
Gillingham had 2 meaningful attempts all game, scoring from the 1st of them, and while we were unlucky not to get at least a point, it's an all to familiar story, as we are not ruthless enough in both boxes.
On the plus side I thought Reid showed glimpses of last season's form, but if you want to be successful, Hanson has got to be converting from that pin point cross he put in 2nd half.
With 6 out of the next 8 away from home, we are in danger of being cast adrift, but with Burton sat in 3rd and Northampton in the play off positions, that should be all the motivation we need to get back up there, as we are a far better side than them.

Certainly enjoyed the first half with controlled football from both sides and impressive peformance from City's back four. Gillingham's goal reminded me of Villa's second goal at Villa Park. Can't blame Jimmy Hanson for not saving City yesterday. He received just two crosses all match that he could have scored from. Other centre forwards routinely get much better service and can score on a percentage basis. Look at Villa's goal scoring sensation, Benteki, and the chances he missed against City. City will win the Cup and scrape into the play-offs!

Of the last six results four have been defeats and two draws. It is not being prophetically gloomy to suggest that statistically this is relegation form and nowhere near the standard of consistency required for promotion. Of all games played in the league this season, our goals for average is about 1.5 per game, another indicator of where the problems lie.
The club has done marvellously well to ride the challenges posed by so many injuries to key personnel. They have excelled at achieving the impossible in the Capital Cup, but it has to be realistically stated that the team is still a work in progress with regard to competing for promotion.
Promotion teams invariably have a forward who scores in excess of 20 goals per season. They also have a box to box midfielder who weighs in with 12 to 15, plus twos, threes and fours from other players. There are just too many City players who have no idea where the goal is and the rigid 4-4-2 formation is becoming easily countered by teams who know thay we don't get bodies in the penalty box other than at set plays.
The management team have worked hard to increase the player quality and their coaching has brought discipline and lots more nous in defence. There is little indication that the same can be said for attacking play. Too many poor deliveries and crosses and insufficient targets for the supply even when crosses are damaging.
One wonders if the success of the cup run has meant that the Board have deferred the resources needed to push on for promotion this season?
The acquisition of Nelson was a sensible and timely signing, but with the finances available it seems strange that the observable weaknesses in the team have not been addressed. The stats don't lie, despite City having a case for taking up atrocious refereeing with the FA.
