Durham Saints 6, Bradford Bears 0 (after overtime)

Bradford Bears, the American football team of the University of Bradford, saw their BUCS National Championship play-off fate slip out of their hands as they went down by the narrowest of margins in their final away game of the regular season.

The Bears edged the Saints in the first half, although neither team had a clear-cut chance, and the second was also fruitless, although the Bears feel they should have won.

Their best chance in the half came when they were camped inside the opposition's 20-yard line, but could only get as close as a dropped catch in the end zone, and their game went to overtime for the third occasion this season.

The Bears had the first shot at a score in overtime but came up inches short on their fourth down to give the Saints an opportunity to win the game.

And it was with a pass to the end zone that was tipped by the Bears’ defence but fell agonisingly into the hands of a Saints’ receiver that the hosts took the game.

The Bears now know they must win both their remaining games if they are to have any chance of post- season action this season.

They play Teeside Cougars on Sunday and Leeds Carnegie on Sunday, February 17, both games kicking off at 1pm at Bradford University Playing Fields at Woodhall, Pudsey.
