Yorkshire Inter-District League Division One leaders Bradford No 1’s winning streak came to an end in their snooker match at second-placed Castleford No 1, although the side still managed a 3-3 draw against a good home team to keep their unbeaten season going.
Bradford had won their previous six matches this campaign and had come into this match knowing another good win would give them one hand on the trophy.
Mark Slater, who had been in excellent form in 2012-13, came up against an in-form Mikey Tomlinson, and it was the Castleford player who took his chances and put the hosts two up with 72-8, 73-34 wins.
Captain Kevin Firth then suffered the same fate, going down 52-29 against Danny Womersley, and at 3-0 things looked grim.
Firth pulled a frame back taking their next 51-35 before Wayne Cooper closed the match against Andy Howard, taking the frames 70-27 and 84-32, which included breaks of 51 and 46.
Bradford No 1 travel to Harrogate on Sunday in their next fixture.
Bradford No 2 are looking to climb back to the top of Division Three after their disappointing loss at Wakefield No 1 last time out. They host Brighouse No 2 at Manningham Ward on Sunday (7.30pm).
The billiards side have no fixture but host Leeds on Saturday, February 16 at Great Horton Cons.
Meanwhile, Bradford youngster Russell Morgan improved on last season's runners-up place by winning the Yorkshire Under-16 Snooker Championship at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.
Morgan came through a strong field and beat Sheffield’s Robert Kennedy in the final.
Morgan has also entered the Yorkshire Open Snooker Championships, which start later this month, and qualifying matches involving Bradford’s players are as follows: February 24: Gareth Green v Greg Taylor, Anthony Green v Steve Carter, Lewis Walsh v Grant Chapman, Howard Mawson v Paul Lawson, Wayne Cooper v Rangzib Mohammed. March 24: Kevin Firth v Andy Blamire, Damian Wilks v Mark Ball, Russell Morgan v Shaun Wilkes.
