Jarrod Sammut has geared up for Friday’s crunch clash at Hull FC by declaring: “The best is yet to come!”

The Bulls stand-off enjoyed an outstanding game in Sunday’s Super League opener at home to Wakefield and combined superbly with Brett Kearney.

The Malta international scored twice against the Wildcats and was instrumental throughout as the Bulls romped to a 40-6 victory.

The resounding success has set Francis Cummins’ men up nicely for the tough test that awaits them at the KC Stadium.

Asked whether he felt he had hit top gear against Wakefield, Sammut said: “No, I think there’s still plenty more to come.

“Not everything came off last week and things weren’t perfect, but this is probably the best I’ve felt for a while.

“I just need to keep taking care of myself and making sure I’m right each week.

“Hopefully by doing that I can keep being consistent and producing more performances like I did last weekend against Wakey.”

Sammut endured a stop-start debut campaign last year, suffering cruel luck with injuries, but ended it on a high with four tries during the final-round defeat to Catalan Dragons in Perpignan.

With Ben Jeffries having retired, and Luke Gale set for another month on the sidelines, Sammut’s partnership with Kearney has taken on added importance.

The 25-year-old reflected: “I’m one of those players who has a pretty kamikaze style and I expect to get some sort of niggles, but last year I got some really serious injuries.

“But this year I’ve been working really hard on my prehab and rehab to make sure I’m fully fit.

“We’re missing Galey, which is a bit of a blow, but BK has stepped forward and we’re really putting together a strong partnership.

“Everyone else is jumping on the back of that and it’s making our jobs a lot easier.

“At the moment things are coming off.

“Franny has really been on my case to make sure that I support play and am always in the right position.

“It’s something I’ve worked hard on because when you’re in the right place at the right time, things pay off.

“It’s always good when you see a bit of space and you’ve got to back yourself.

“Luckily enough for me, I got through to the try-line on a couple of occasions last weekend and I was really happy with that.”

The Bulls face a sterner test of their play-off potential at Hull on Friday and Sammut added: “This year we have really come together as a group and said ‘if we don’t make the eight then we’ve definitely underachieved’.

“We left everything on the field against Wakefield, there was nothing left at the end of the eighty minutes.

“It was just a great start to the season for us – the first home game, two points and we couldn’t have asked for more.

“But we need to go and do it all over again at Hull now.”

Sammut picked up a minor knock on his calf against Wakefield but looks certain to be fit to face Hull.

Prop Nick Scruton suffered a blow to the face during Sunday’s game but is similarly hopeful of being available for Friday’s encounter.
