Gareth Grant triple puts Farsley back in mix

Cammell Laird 2 Farsley 4

A Gareth Grant hat-trick was the highlight as Farsley earned a superb victory to reinvigorate their push for a play-off finish in Evo-Stik Division One North.

Lairds were lurking right behind their visitors in the table but both teams knew a win could take them into the play-off zone.

Grant opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added a second ten minutes before the break. The home side hit back before the interval though, when Jamie Henders netted a disputed penalty right on the stroke of half-time.

A Ryan Harrison strike 11 minutes into the second period restored Farsley’s two-goal cushion and Grant claimed his three-timer in the 74th minute. The game was over as a contest but Craig Cairns did peg another one back for the home side with five minutes remaining.

Lairds dropped three places to ninth and other results went the way of Neil Parsley’s side to see them back in the promotion mix.

Parsley said: “It was a fantastic result for us and I thought we really went about the job very efficiently. We were very good in every department, both on the pitch and in the mind with commitment and desire.

“But for a poor decision from an assistant referee on the stroke of half-time, it could have been even better. Ryan Serrant clearly played the ball before their player made a meal of the challenge. But I don’t want to dwell on the negatives I would just say well done Granty and congratulations to all the lads for a great win.”
