Brighouse Town bow out of FA Vase
4:23pm Sunday 27th January 2013 in Sport By Ian Whiting
Newport (IoW) 2, Brighouse Town 1
Two goals in as many minutes deep into the second half dumped Brighouse Town out of the FA Vase after they had taken a slender lead into the break on the Isle of Wight.
Newport overcame the deficit thanks to a quick-fire brace from Tom McInnes and they then battened down the hatches as Town looked for an equaliser.
The visitors had dominated their Wessex League hosts but failed to get the rewards their efforts deserved.
Town chairman Ray McLaughlin said: “We did all we could do. Paul (manager Quinn) got the preparation right and the players came up with the performance on the day. But this is cup football and you can’t guarantee a result.”
The home side started well and one effort was cleared off the line by Nick Jaggar in a ten-minute spell that had Town on the back foot. But after weathering that, the visitors began creating chances of their own.
They broke the deadlock midway through the first half following good build-up play. Once the ball was in the home side’s area it was smuggled to the back post and Ernest Boafa slotted in from close range.
Town played most of the football for the rest of the tie but could not produce a second goal.
The game turned in the blink of an eye with a brace from McInnes. He grabbed his first in the 74th minute and netted again two minutes later.
The visitors twice came close to taking the tie into extra time late on. A shot from Danny Nadiole was tipped over by the home keeper and a Ryan Hall effort struck the bar in the last minute.
