Bradford Park Avenue hoping on-off match not off again at Gainsborough
The game was off, then it was back on again but the weather could yet mean it will be off again. Further explanation needed?
Well, Bradford Park Avenue were scheduled to make the journey to Gainsborough Trinity in Blue Square Bet North tomorrow. The fixture was shelved because Trinity had reached the quarter-final of the FA Trophy.
The ties in the last eight were due to be played tomorrow but the recent bad weather has prevented Gateshead and Barrow, Trinity’s prospective opponents, from completing their tie in the previous round.
That would have left both the Lincolnshire club and Bradford with no game, so commonsense prevailed and the original fixture was reinstated. That is, if the conditions allow any play at Trinity’s Northolme tomorrow.
Bradford boss John Deacey is desperate for his players to see some action after finally getting some numbers back in his squad.
Avenue were set to host Workington last Saturday and Vauxhall Motors the following Monday but both games were called off due to the weather.
Influential players Richard Marshall and Nathan Hotte were due to return to the squad following suspensions and Deacey was also ready to risk Martin Drury for the first time since his knee operation and Alex Davidson, who has been dogged by niggling injuries.
Deacey said: “I have competition for places in areas now and that is all I have wanted so it’s good news for me and the players. We have a small squad and we need everyone available because there are a lot of games still to come.”
Avenue currently lie in 11th spot but are just four points behind Gainsborough, who are a lofty fourth, although the Bradford club have played two games more than their hosts.
