Post-Olympic fever has resulted in entries doubling for the West Yorkshire Under-11 Sportshall Athletics Trials.

After a disappointing response last winter, over 160 children from the county attended the Bingley Harriers-organised trials at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

And the increased numbers has boosted the chances of the West Yorkshire boys and girls’ teams having a successful day at the Yorkshire Under-11s Sportshall Fun in Athletics Festival in Halifax next Sunday.

A team of 15 boys and a team of 15 girls will take part there from West Yorkshire, all of them being selected on their all-round ability after running, jumping and throwing events.

Sports centre staff and an army of volunteers helped Harriers members to stage the event, which included sprinting, standing long jump and standing triple jump.

Although there was plenty of quality on display, records were hard to come by, but Lois Logan did equal the girls’ chest push record of 7.50 metres set by Bingley Harrier Rhea Southcott last year.
