Bradford Bulls denied victory by old rivals Leeds Rhinos
4:38pm Sunday 20th January 2013 in Sport
By Ross Heppenstall, Bradford Bulls Reporter
Leeds Rhinos 24, Bradford Bulls 24
Jarrod Sammut and Brett Kearney grabbed two tries apiece but the Bulls were denied victory over rivals Leeds by Danny McGuire in his testimonial match today.
Sammut scored twice early on to put the Bulls in control and Kearney took a fine pass from Nick Scruton to stretch their lead to 18-0 midway through the first half.
Leeds hit back with two tries from new recruit Joe Vickery shortly before the interval but Kevin Sinfield failed to convert either of them, leaving the scores at 18-8 in Bradford’s favour.
Rob Burrow crossed for Leeds shortly before the hour mark but five minutes later Kearney weaved his way over for his second and Jamie Foster’s fourth conversion put the Bulls 24-14 up.
Leeds responded through England winger Ryan Hall with 12 minutes remaining but Francis Cummins was denied a winning return to Headingley when McGuire scampered clear in trademark fashion in the 70th minute.
The match also saw James Donaldson make a long-waited return to action after injury in front of a crowd of 6,106.
It was an evenly-fought contest from which Cummins could draw plenty of positives ahead of the Super League opener at home to Wakefield on February 3.

Nice to see Scruton with his bag of ice so expect the usual news, whitehead could be feeling that shoulder in the morning.
Leeds still in the warm climes of Portugal for 1st half.
Look forward to Sheff posting his take on it with it being nearer his house than odsal.

Ball handling Chev at 13 that's going to work well :-P

I've had a word with Omar and I agree with him
Franny has to go Poor manager. He had the chance to go and spend big money to put an awesome team together
The NRL is going to miss all those star players the Bulls have signed
Wigan Warrington Saints Leeds have nothing on us this season 1st place I think and def champions of Super League 2013
Best part all under the management of Victimisation

But what I saw , from where I sat, was a determined and well in tune team with more power up front than the knockers gave us credit for and a good quality working of the defence and attack capabilities of the our players which does credit to the fact we have only been a credible team since November/December, compared to Leeds who are a well seasoned championship side. It actually was a most enjoyable game, in pleasant surroundings, Then of course we get the unmitigated clap trap from you know who??? When he attempts to sour it all...
Take your blinkers off, That was bulls best performance against leeds warm up and 1st game this year for lots of them .

Apart from the kearney try it was a lot of 1 man rugby .

I was there my opinion is valid, I would in future like to converse with people who go to games unlike some of the above, If you would please put at the end of your posts if you attend or are an armchair fan that will help me, Also It will also be a good way to ignore Sheffield and viking who have the lame excuse after excuse why they don't attend.

I thought it was a good performance by us. We still had 5 what I could consider to be first team players out (Heath, Langley, Bateman, Purtell and Gale) so to hold the current champions who were at almost full strength (Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there were only Jones-Bishop and Leuleui missing) to a draw is a good result. Thought Jobe Murphy had good game, didn't look out of place at all. Sammat had cracking game as well. It was nice to see Scruton back in the middle, his offload to Kearney was as good as you'll see anywhere else. All in all a top performance. Roll on Wakey!
