9:22pm

Crewe Alexandra 4 Bradford City 1

City will not be going to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after being knocked out in the northern area semi-finals tonight for the third time in four years.
Kyel Reid fired them into an 18th-minute lead as Alan Martin let his 25-yarder slither through his grasp.
But the home side equalised just before the break with Nathan Doyle turning the ball into his own net trying to clear Byron Moore’s deflected cross.
City almost had a second own goal when Tom Naylor hit the inside of the post before Ryan Dickson made a superb block to stop Moore converting the rebound.
But Jon McLaughlin was at fault for Crewe’s second, allowing Max Clayton’s diving header to beat him at the near post.
As City threw men forward late on, Crewe struck twice more in the closing minutes through Bradden Inman and Chuks Aneke.

9:20pm

And now it's 4-1 as ANEKE drills home.

9:19pm

Wells makes room for a shot which Phillips saves low down. There are going to be two minutes of added time.

9:17pm

It's all over now as INMAN breaks away to make it 3-1

9:16pm

McHugh inches away from an equaliser with header past far post.

9:15pm

Comedy keeping continues as the ball bounces over Phillips completely misjudges bounce in mix-up with Murphy but ball is hooked clear in front of goal.

9:12pm

McHugh comes on for Dickson with seven minutes left and he's been thrown up front. Final throw of the dice from Parkinson.

9:11pm

Crewe have ball in the net again but it's given offside. A few idiots spill on the pitch but are quickly dealt with.

9:10pm

Crewe again threatening and McLaughlin spills Inman shot. City's keeper has had a poor night.

9:08pm

So nearly a Crewe third

9:06pm

Crewe take 2-1 lead in 77th minute. Moore cross is met by diving header from sub Clayton but McLaughlin should have done better to keep it out.

9:03pm

Turgott tries to go round outside but angle against him and cross floats behind goal.

9:03pm

Reid makes great run into box but then ran out of ideas. Still won a corner though.

9:01pm

Jones mistake gives ball away on halfway line but City back in numbers to thwart Crewe break.

8:56pm

Corner for City but it comes to nothing.

8:54pm

City make double sub as Wells and Hines replace Gray and Connell, 66min gone.

8:54pm

Inman shapes up for another volley and connects well but his aim is off.

8:54pm

Poor clearance from Doyle straight to Inman but his shot deflected behind for corner. Crewe on top now.

8:50pm

City almost score a second own goal as Naylor tries to intercept Tootle cross and turns it against inside of the post. Ball rebounds to Moore to shoot at unguarded goal but Dickson makes goal-saving block.

8:46pm

Turgott looks confident on the ball and stretches his legs again to test left back Tootle.

8:44pm

Connell almost pokes ball through to Jones in six-yard box.

8:42pm

Ravenhill takes it but can't clear the first man who heads away at the near post.

8:41pm

Reid responds by winning corner for City.

8:39pm

City caught out badly as Davis finds room in box but McLaughlin does well to tip over for corner.

8:38pm

Crewe goal now being credited as Doyle own goal. He'll be happy with that.

8:34pm

Crewe make a sub for the second half - the keeper. Alan Martin pays the price for his part in City's goal and on comes veteran Steve Phillips.

8:29pm

8:28pm

8:28pm

8:26pm

Think it was Moore's goal and can't see Doyle wanting to argue that he got the decisive touch.

8:25pm

8:18pm

Half-time and City's good work is undone in the final minute.

8:16pm

Crewe attack again and McLaughlin beats out shot from Leitch-Smith. Suddenly home side have taken control.

8:16pm

Crewe are level. MOORE gets past Dickson to whip cross over, took bit of deflection and beats McLaughlin as Doyle, sliding in, turns the ball into net. 1-1

8:14pm

Turgott does well to drill in low cross from corner but Connell's half-hearted shot is easily blocked.

8:13pm

8:13pm

Good skill by Pogba to find space to shoot from Crewe corner. But the angle was too tight and he hammered ball behind.

8:09pm

Crowd is 2,935 with 439 City fans. Good effort from the travelling Bantams.

8:08pm

Not a lot happening here and City won't mind that. Crewe can't get going and Pogba's attempt to break ruled out by foul.

8:04pm

8:00pm

Floats to far post where Mellor heads away. Turgott puts it back in but Naylor's header is too far out and harmless.

8:00pm

Almost same spot where Reid scored from and he's standing over ball.

7:59pm

City free-kick in good position five yards from Crewe box.

7:59pm

Martin off his line to clear unconvincingly into touch. Keeper looks a bit wobbly after City goal.

7:55pm

City back four looking pretty comfortable so far.

7:54pm

Crewe fans pretending they've scored a goal. City don't need to do that.

7:53pm

Crewe have the ball in the net through Leitch-Smith but Pogba is offside.

7:50pm

City take the lead. Good's ball upfield falls to REID who has a crack from 25 yards out which flies straight through keeper Alan Martin's grasp. 0-1

7:46pm

This time Doyle's head clears the danger before Moore shanks an attempted cross into the car park behind the ground.

7:46pm

City still have defending to do after conceding free-kick five yards outside box.

7:45pm

Ball played back to taker Tootle but Naylor wins important header to take it off Pogba.

7:45pm

First corner of the game for Crewe.

7:44pm

Gray looks to get through again but Mellor reads it quickly and nicks ball away on the edge of the Crewe box.

7:44pm

Dickson free-kick met by Gray header but no pace on the original ball and Martin saves comfortably.

7:43pm

Positive run by Dickson into Crewe territory ended with a shove in the back.

7:43pm

Whoever wins tonight will play Coventry away first leg in the northern final.

7:40pm

Can't miss Crewe keeper Alan Martin, he looks like Bananaman in his day-glo yellow kit.

7:39pm

Better cross from Turgott on the right but Mellor flicks it clear from the waiting Reid.

7:36pm

Reid first chance to cross but it's an awful early one that flies behind the goal.

7:35pm

Martin scuffs his first clearance from Crewe goal but ball goes straight to one of the home players.

7:35pm

City fans in the superbly-named Ice Cream Van Stand are in good voice. Quite a decent atmosphere here.

7:34pm

Jon McLaughlin gets an early touch in his first game since the FA Cup replay at Brentford.

7:33pm

7:31pm

So Doyle conundrum solves - he's playing right back.

7:30pm

7:23pm

Reasonable turn-out of City fans given the greater cup attractions dwarfing this one - and the fact that it's bitterly cold

7:23pm

Be interesting to see where Nathan Doyle is playing. Could be usual role in midfield or switched to back four, either at centre half or right back.

6:52pm

6:52pm

6:52pm

Lots of talk about Kilmarnock centre half Michael Nelson on his way to City. I understand it is likely to happen but don't think it has gone through yet.

6:51pm

Phil Parkinson risks a fine by making eight changes from the side that started against Oxford.

The City boss hinted that he would be resting several players for the JPT northern area semi-final at Crewe, even though competition rules insist you must play a minimum six starters from the previous game.

He has proved true to his word by making wholesale changes with only Andy Gray, Ryan Dickson and Nathan Doyle staying in.

It is a good opportunity for the likes of Kyel Reid, Alan Connell and keeper Jon McLaughlin.

CITY: McLaughlin, Jones, Naylor, Good, Dickson, Turgott, Doyle, Ravenhill, Reid, Connell, Gray. Subs: McHugh, Wells, Hines, Brown, Duke.

Out of the paintpot, but never mind. Now we can concentrate on more important matters. First a massively hard game at Vale on Saturday and hopefully a massive 3pts. Then the easier of the two, a second leg match at Villa and if can avoid defeat, then I think we all know where we are all heading for. I listened to the game tonight and according to Tim, even at 2-1 down we looked like the team most likely to score the next goal and go on to win the game. But we were caught on the break. We can always win it next season along with the Europa cup. We are already in dreamland and we are living the dream and it's still well alive.

Of course we "shuffled the pack tonight", the competition has been treated as nothing more than a completive reserve fixture. Half the squad are absolutely knackered and needed the night off.

And what on earth do you mean by PP needs to show faith in McHugh? He's been an ever present since he was thrown in at the deep end with the exception of the couple of weeks he had off injured. He's going to have 2 massive games coming up and PP made the correct option to rest him tonight.

And PP signed another defender with the news yesterday Meredith may be out for the season with glandular fever...

Three words spring to mind; blessing in disguise.

Think we were also right playing a weakened team and risk getting a fine; surely common sense will prevail though, when people see our schedule.

Question I would like to ask, is would a club still get a fine for playing a weakened side if they had won.

an irrelevant hypothetical question: we played a so called weakened team and lost. So it is deemed we played a weakened team then a fine is appropriate. We may be able to appeal that fine given the relative experience of the players used.

Could not agree more Harrogate the cup games have been a massive bonus and a financial blessing but as you say promotion from this "gawd awful league " was Phil Parkinson's brief let's hope we can start picking some league points up or it may be a chasing game,Port Vale,Fleetwood Town,Gillingham and Rotherham in the next month will be a big test of just where we are as a promotion chasing team..!! here's hoping were up to the challenge ?.

What are you on about? We have Good and Naylor as our only centre half cover, Davies and Oliver out long term, remember?? This means any injury to McArdle or McHugh and we have to play Doyle at the back.

The signing of Dickson( not Dickinson) was also astute, given the knowledge regarding Mez's illness.

We have nowhere near 30 players in the squad that are Bradford City players, we had a tiny squad to begin with, done on purpose, and have had to add to this as injury, fatigue and illness have taken it's toll.

This squad is one place below the play off positions, in the semi final of the 2nd biggest cup competition in England and have played some of the most attacking football we have seen at VP since the days of the climb TO the prem.

PP has had some difficult decisions to make as regards trying to get results but rest some of the players, we are only 6 games short of playing a full league season and if you add 3 more games to that it is the minimum we could have played this year, so 49 games in total as opposed to the 60+ we will play. It takes it's toll no matter what anyone says, especially when you consider the games we have played which have gone to 120 minutes.

If you are a City fan the best you can do is applaud our manager for trying to give us the best chance in this second half of the season by keeping us in touch with the pack and also in a semi final of a real cup.

PS, sounded like my choice for the keeper's jersey had a bit of an off un last night.
