Andy Gray will be cup-tied for the rematch with Villa but will be pitched straight into the Bantams’ League Two promotion push when Oxford visit Valley Parade on Saturday
Phil Parkinson reckons Andy Gray’s lack of action with Leeds will spell good news for City’s promotion push.
Gray yesterday rejoined the club he left in 2004 and signed a deal tying him to Valley Parade for the next 18 months with an option at the end of it.
The 35-year-old, who previously played under Parkinson at Charlton, chose Leeds over the Bantams last summer following his release from Barnsley.
But he hardly got a sniff at Elland Road, starting just one Capital One Cup tie.
Gray came off the bench eight times in the Championship, scoring once against Hull, and his biggest run-out was for only 18 minutes.
Parkinson reckons that guarantees City a very hungry addition.
He said: “It’s a bonus for us. Andy comes into a squad where we need some fresh legs and he is champing at the bit to get going.
“He has sat on the bench the majority of the season and never really got a chance.
“But it’s very difficult to turn down when a Championship club come in with all their resources. We were talking to Andy among several other players at the time and we’ve always monitored the situation.
“I know what he can do from working with him before. He is a hard-working player both on matchdays and in training and will be a good influence on the younger ones in the squad.”
Gray’s arrival will also take some of the heat off James Hanson and he gives City another option down the middle.
Parkinson added: “It’s a big responsibility on Hans’s shoulders to lead the line week in, week out. Andy can do a similar job to James in terms of being the targetman but he’s a different type of one.
“Andy’s also a consummate professional and that’s one of the key aspects we’re bringing into the club.
“We’re building that ethos of professionalism and want people coming on board who will be singing from the same hymn sheet.”
Gray is cup-tied for the second crack at Aston Villa but he can play in the JPT northern area semi-final at Crewe next week.
Meanwhile, City’s youngsters will finally play their FA Youth Cup third-round tie with Histon at Valley Parade tonight (7.00 kick-off), with the winners earning a home draw against Liverpool.
The game comes too soon for Kyle Harrison and Louie Swain, who have just returned to training from injury. But Steve Thornber has a strong squad to pick from.
He said: “There are going to be a few very unhappy second years but that’s the way it is.
“We’re just glad to be playing at last because we haven’t been able to agree a date.
“Some of the Histon side are also playing in their first team and we’ve bent over backwards to help them. I’m not sure the same thing would be done for us.
“You never know which way it’s going to go but with everything going on at the club we want to ride along with it. There’s no bigger incentive than the thought of playing Liverpool if we win.”

having said that his best two games in the last couple of months have been the two big games, so maybe he's putting himself in the shop window. I cant blame him being ambitious!
It would be nice to keep him until at least the summer, but every player has a price when your a poor fourth division club.
I trust that the combination of Lawn/ Rhodes/ Baldwin and Parkinson will do what they feel is best for our club!

As for rumours around Wells hope they remain just that rumours! would send a very negative message out if we sold him.Would like the club to make a statement that he is not for sale final.I know people will say every player has his price etc etc but he will still be worth X amount of hundreds of thousand pounds in the summer lets keep it all together this is our best chance for success on incredibly 3 fronts ever.

i'm still on a high so don't want to be negative here but he wasn't 'my cup of tea' the first time he was here, on the basis he wasn't a natural finisher (good at penalties though) and wasn't aggressive enough for me. However he may have changed his game since then and Hanson needed competition. Gray plays with his back to goal alot and can hold the ball well, but my first choice would still be Hanson......good luck to Gray though and he could prove to be an astute signing. Atkinson is a good example of a player turning things around and despite not been a natural winger offers effort, discipline and calmness on the ball. Gray also doesn't have the pace but has atributes to his game that can help others.....just my humble opnion ;-)

As for Gray, I'm not sure he is anything remotely similar to Hanson, so will we have to change our style? As I remember him, he was closer to Atkinson but with a better finish.
Still hoping we bag an attacking midfielder so we can change tight games with a different option.
Then, if we can just tie down Turgott & Good on longer loans, I'm sure we won't be far short.

To turn down such an offer would be daft! Nakhi strikes me as ambitious, but some times he lacks a bit of get up and go against the typical fouth division defenders. I dont want to be critical of him, as he's been great for us, but if we start turning down offers from big championship clubs (that would rule out Hudds!) I am sure he would be peeved and his perfomnaces would suffer. There is not a lot to be said for keeping a player against his wishes, even if we did give him a deal when nobody else would! If we sold him to leeds for £1m the he was crap at champ level, and we got him back for next to nowt in a couple of years, that would be perfect!!!

It's not often I agree with the poster called Peter Vile, but I'm with him on this one. Hanson played a blinder on Tuesday and does do a lot of stuff that doesn't naturally get recognised by the fans. Still don't think he works as hard as he should when attacking the ball, but every player will have areas to work on. Just look what he can do when he really attacks a cross. However, on Tuesday he was abysmal with one header from which he should have scored & a second header which was not put away was a very very good half chance.
Won't talk about his virtually none exesistant shooting.
Unfortunately, and i am very sorry to say this, with James you know execactly how he is going to play before the game even starts. He has never added added any variation to his game at all.
Possibly very little better now than when he first came to us three years ago.
Nothing would give me greater pleasure than James Hanson proving me wrong.

Which brings me to my point. JH probably needs to start playing for fouls. Some people have said he needs to be more like Bobby Campbell but that would not work in todays game. JHs problem is he's too honest as player.
I think Windass would be extremely good at coaching that into him...

a) Attacking the ball, like he did on Tuesday night, when he almost put us 3-0 up. He got up and really attacked the ball and was unlucky not to see it go into the top corner. he attacks the ball in our box (when defending set pieces), so why not in the opposition box? Tuesday night proved he has it in his locker.
b) Hanson does get dragged around a lot and yet, as soon as he sticks out an arm to lever against the marker, he gets penalised. It's time Hanson learned how to be more savvy in these situations. Windass was excellent and could really teach Hanson a lot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting James goes screaming in the fref's face after a decision goes against him, but he never says anything.

Don't even want to think about losing Wells, but to be fair, it is inevitable. Shame Leicester aren't one of those interested. We could have done a cash plus player (Jamie Vardy) deal. Wells won't want to miss out on a possible final appearance surely. How about signing him now, but loaning him back to us for a month??

James to me is a 'wholehearted' player who offers a lot in terms of the 'threat' perceived by opposition central defenders from his headers/jumps to win/play off the ball/goals. He has his weaknesses-apart from Messi-who doesn't- but I see him as a true asset and am delighted he's in OUR squad.
He DOES deserve a 'rest' an with Andy, Alan and Nahki as well, this allows for some sensible rotation!

Reading this lot I'm surprised you all have the gaul to post. Parkinson and Atkinson criticism was shown to be unfounded, Hanson criticism might have some mileage but why - overplay/lost form/lack of support. What he does for the team now is tremendous and he is an honest player and as such will always be in contention for my side. I dont know if Gray will be a success here but he will help Hanson and that can only be great for the TEAM. As far a speculation on Wells, I sincerely hope you lot are wrong again - he is our goal scorer, thorn in the side of all defences, a developing player and in years to come will play in the premier league hopefully with us. Dont underestimate what we have going at VP now, we are moving forward and selling our asset will not help. Woe betide Lawn if he sells out Thats the message supporters should be sending out not bragging about the pathetic predictions that no-one cares about

All i was getting at is his goal ratio for a centre forward is very poor and he does miss a lot of easy chances i dont think many people would disagree with that.

SORRY!! could anyone point me in to the direction which states that Wells wants to leave and/or City will sell him ? i am not niave but even i know a contract is not worth the money it is printed on.Stop putting ideas into his head because that what £££'s agents are paid to do. Jeez, some people will NEVER be able to see beyond their basic understanding of professional football. The 'invisible' side of football is rarely appreciated by those, (I'm going to sound like Steve Claridge here) who haven't played the game above a certain level. They see the defence splitting pass but miss the run across a defenders eyeline which takes him and his attention away from the space the pass is threaded through, etc etc

Everyone who reads these posts regularly will be aware of me always trying to defend the efforts made by all at VP. As for the naivity about Wells staying until we reach the Premier? What decade are you living in? Players don't stay that long like Steve Bull did etc? I do think we should tell him, look , you're contracted, we need you to stay till the end of the season but then you can chose the best club for you (not necessarily highest bidder)- like Arsenal did with Fabregas etc. letting him go now would be typically Bradford City, shortsightedness.
Also think Gray is a poor signing -18month contract?? He's 35 and barely played for a season!

However, having said all that, I would be very surprised if Nahki hasn't agreed a contract with City with some sort of release clause in it. If this is the case then -depending on the details of any release clause of course- everything I have said above may be irrelevant.
We'll just have to wait and see whether any serious interest in him being bought exists. I think if any of our Chairmen publicly announce a bid has been made then Nahki is going. Even if the offer is turned down.

i'm still on a high so don't want to be negative here but he wasn't 'my cup of tea' the first time he was here, on the basis he wasn't a natural finisher (good at penalties though) and wasn't aggressive enough for me. However he may have changed his game since then and Hanson needed competition. Gray plays with his back to goal alot and can hold the ball well, but my first choice would still be Hanson......good luck to Gray though and he could prove to be an astute signing. Atkinson is a good example of a player turning things around and despite not been a natural winger offers effort, discipline and calmness on the ball. Gray also doesn't have the pace but has atributes to his game that can help others.....just my humble opnion ;-)
Atkinson reminded me of Leigh Palin but he was tackling players too.
