Result will send shockwaves right round the world, says stunned Bradford City chairman

McHUGH’S A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW: Centre half Carl McHugh powers a header past a helpless Shay Given to make it 3-1 on another incredible night at Valley Parade

SETTING TONGUES WAGGING: Rory McArdle in celebration mode after making it 2-0

City basked in the glory of another incredible night of Capital One Cup giant-killing but were then warned: We’re not at Wembley yet.

Aston Villa went the way of Wigan and Arsenal as Phil Parkinson’s warriors claimed a third Premier League scalp at a euphoric Valley Parade.

The 3-1 win gives them a real shout of seeing the job through at Villa Park on January 22 – and becoming the first fourth-tier team in the competition’s 53-year history to reach a Wembley final.

Elated joint-chairman Mark Lawn said: “In my wildest dreams, I would have taken a 1-1 draw just to stay in it. I’m just stunned.

“That result is going to send shockwaves right round the world.

“It’s an incredible effort from the team and the backroom staff who have kept them fit. That’s a big well done to fitness coach Nick Allamby.

“We’ve played 38 games now – more than anyone – and you’ve got old man Jonesy (Gary Jones) running round like a spring chicken.

“But we’ve got to remember that Villa are a Premier League side and they can easily score three goals at home. We’re going to have to work our socks off – but there’s no saying we can’t.”

Nahki Wells fired City in front in the first half and Rory McArdle doubled the lead. Andreas Weimann’s late strike seemed to put Villa back in control of the tie before Carl McHugh sealed an unforgettable night with a third home goal.

Parkinson insisted the Bantams are still underdogs heading into the away leg.

He said: “Villa are going to be favourites and massively fancied to turn us over. But equally we can go there and make sure that if they are going to get to Wembley, they’ll really have to earn it.

“When we saw the Villa team sheet it was almost a statement that they wanted to win the tie straight off. They really went for it.

“But when we got the ball, some of our football was absolutely outstanding. Everyone will mention the set-play delivery but some of the passing was great.

“There was a calmness in the way we played and I thought Gary Jones was back to his best.”

Matt Duke was in superb form with a string of saves to keep out Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor. And Parkinson hailed the efforts of rookie defenders McHugh and Curtis Good.

“We had two 19-year-olds at the back and Curtis was playing out of position (at left back). That will almost go unnoticed but for two such young players, my goodness me, they were tremendous.

“We couldn’t quite believe it when Carl got that third goal. It makes it a great night in two weeks’ time.

“The media spotlight will be on us even more now because we’ve given ourselves a chance. We’ve got to relish that.”

Parkinson is closing in on City’s first signing of the transfer window, thought to be a striker. And he felt last night’s victory was a great advert for the club.

“We’re working on something and getting closer,” he said. “Potential signings watching us and seeing performances like that with the big crowd and the atmosphere will want to be a part of it."

We've all been saying that 'promotion is the most important thing this season' incl. me but...here's the thing...if City were to get to Wembley v Swansea or Chelsea...it would go down in the club's history as its greatest ever achievement and 1st tier v 4th tier team is unlikely to be surpassed!!. No other 4th tier club has managed it in the modern era. (When the competition started it happened but the top clubs were'n't involved back then.)

It's going to be tough...Villa will throw the 'kitchen sink at The Bantams on 22/1/13! They 'could' beat as by a big score!! But...then again...

So, I am going to say it...let's do it City...let's make history...whatever happens in the promotion 'stakes...LET'S MAKE HISTORY!!

Well that was a superb result. Never say die Bradford City battled superbly all over the pitch. We don't need another striker, just convert Carl McHugh to Centre forward. That was a superb header any striker would have been proud of. Keep it going lads and lets climb the league table now.

As you can see they have only scored 15 goals at home, 5 games NOT scoring any, 6 games only scoring ONCE, 3 games scoring TWICE, and scoring 3 goals ONLY ONCE, of which, if they want to get to wembley, they have to score against us on the 22nd.
I know it is a cup game, and we are old Div 4, but looking at the above results and the way the lads have played, and THE REWARD, I think I had better book my hotel.

superlatives aside, I watched the game in a pub in a Camden Town and saw a very good football team. The stats show what a part City played. We kept the ball well, looked to build, stayed composed and, perhaps most importantly, no player lost focus. Everyone was absolutely committed. It was a pleasure to watch and made me feel proud. When James Hanson's header hit the bar and almost made it 3-0 we were entering the twilight zone.
Thank you to PP, the players and all involved for some fantastic entertainment and for lifting our spirits.
Villa will come at us like a train in the second leg and the big old place will be rocking before the game starts, so be prepared lads. The real hard work hasn't started, but in any event this one goes down as possibly the greatest Valley Parade cup game. Brilliant!

Now we need to get back to business, concentrate on the job in hand, and get 3 points against Oxford.

What utter bunkum some people talk!

Enjoy this feeling. Savour it and let it bring joy and happiness to your life.

But we must be in league one next season!

This run gives us some financial clout to get up, but if we dont get promotion, the money wont last long.

Phil and the chairmen have unearthed some real gems, but we have well and truly put them in the shop window!

People are speaking today of Villa's inexperienced defence, but none of our first choice back four was playing (at least in the position the manager thinks is best). Wells, Doyle, Hines, McHugh, Darby, McArdle are youngish players who are yet to reach their full potential. they are not league 2 players!

This squad has the potential to be like the 84-85 team, in they way it built towards the nearly season in 87-88. for Hendrie, read Wells and for McCall read Doyle, For Evans, read McArdle (Or Davies, or McHugh). the only difference is that I can see us doing it quicker!

If, and its a big if, we can get the promotion we need this season, we could be in the championship (where a club like ours should be) within two years.
This cup run will hopefully facilitate that rather than be a substitute for it!

Dont worry WE "WILL" be "Up" for that one.

And "if" we score first??? The Panic for the home team will be "off the scale" my friends!

Well done City

However i am not Mr Parkinson and as i have said many times he knows what he is doing So Good Luck City whatever happens you have given a lot of people a lot of joy Thank you all.

Aston Villas home record since 21/04/12

Draw 1-1 West Brom
Draw 1-1 Norwich
Lost 2-3 Man Utd
Draw 0-0 Arsenal
Won 1-0 Reading
Draw 0-0 Stoke
Lost 0-4 Spurs
Lost 0-3 Wigan
Won 2-1 Ipswich

As you can see they have only scored 15 goals at home, 5 games NOT scoring any, 6 games only scoring ONCE, 3 games scoring TWICE, and scoring 3 goals ONLY ONCE, of which, if they want to get to wembley, they have to score against us on the 22nd.
I know it is a cup game, and we are old Div 4, but looking at the above results and the way the lads have played, and THE REWARD, I think I had better book my hotel.

Slightly suspect Maths lawsonio123. If City score 2 then they will lead 5-1 on agg. That would leave Villa needing 5 to go 6-5 up on aggregate (and hence win).

Please don't take the prase "away goals count double literally". Away goals only come into play if aggregate score is level.

As a member of the security team at BCFC, I would like to thank Phil Parkinson & the Players for an absolutely cracking season. I love my job & the fans were superb at last nights game. The atmosphere was amazing & I as a supporter myself I can't explain how elated I was after last nights game.

"Come on City"

And if anyone has seen Charlie's coral jacket from the North Lower stand, please can you hand it in. He is our very own die hard city fan (25yr ticket holder) & everyone knows him. He's been coming to the matches since he was 6 years old & last night was an amazing present for his 60th. "Happy Birthday Charlie, was a pleasure to shake your hand sir" xxx

An exceptional result but an amazing performance.

Even if Villa eventually knock us out nobody can take away a magical night that will live long in the memory.

I gave PP stick at the weekend for team selection and formations for the games against Morecambe and Barnet but he got everything right last night. The selection of an "in the mood" Hines in exploiting a Villa weakness was a masterstoke.

Any league two club is capable of providing an upset during a cup run but, for City to do it three times against Premiership outfits, is little short of astounding. Additionally, it's not just the results but the manner of their performances.

The players must be physically and emotionally drained after last night's efforts.
