John Bateman’s number comes up for Bradford Bulls
8:00am Tuesday 27th November 2012 in Sport
By Ross Heppenstall, Bradford Bulls Reporter
John Bateman has been rewarded for an outstanding 2012 by being promoted to the number 11 shirt for next season
John Bateman’s rise to prominence has been rewarded with the number 11 jersey for the 2013 campaign.
Bulls coach Francis Cummins has announced his squad list for next season and Bradford-born Bateman is the notable inclusion in the top 13, taking the number made vacant by Olivier Elima’s departure.
The 19-year-old forward from West Bowling enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough year in 2012, establishing himself as a first-team regular before captaining the England Academy side on their tour of Australia.
He won the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year award, was shortlisted for the Super League Young Player of the Year and has been tipped by Cummins as a future Bradford captain.
Bateman committed to his home-town club when signing a new long-term contract in October, ending months of speculation about his future.
Bateman wore squad number 26 last term but Cummins said: “John has earned the 11 jersey.
“We’ve spoken about building for the long-term and John is part of that, along with the likes of Elliott Whitehead and Tom Olbison.
“The back row is very competitive but there’s plenty of time for every player to stake a claim for a place in the side.”
Significantly, Adrian Purtell has kept the number two shirt, encouraging hopes that he could be given the green light to resume his playing career.
The Australian centre suffered a heart attack in the aftermath of the Magic Weekend clash with Leeds on May 27 and has not played since.
He will undergo further tests within the next fortnight to determine his fate.
Purtell retaining the number two jersey means new recruit Jamie Foster must make do with number 17.
Matty Blythe takes number four from Chev Walker, suggesting the on-loan Warrington man will begin the campaign as first-choice centre alongside Keith Lulia.
Nick Scruton stays at eight and Manase Manuokafoa has taken number ten from the departed Craig Kopczak.
Jarrod Sammut will wear the six jersey following the departure of Ben Jeffries, while on-loan Warrington forward Ben Evans takes 20.
Teenage trio Oliver Roberts, Sam Wood and Curtis Naughton have been handed 24, 25 and 26 respectively following their promotion into the first-team squad.
Number 27 has been left vacant and could be filled by the acquisition of a new prop.
2013 squad list: 1 Kearney, 2 Purtell, 3 Lulia, 4 Blythe, 5 Kear, 6 Sammut, 7 Gale, 8 Scruton, 9 L’Estrange, 10 Manuokafoa, 11 Bateman, 12 Whitehead, 13 Langley, 14 Diskin, 15 Walker, 16 Olbison, 17 Foster, 18 Platt, 19 Addy, 20 O’Brien, 21 Donaldson, 22 Murphy, 23 Evans, 24 Roberts, 25 Wood, 26 Naughton, 27 AN Other.

Donaldsons mum won't be happy with that and will probably be on the phone as we speak to Franny.

It's ridiculous. Two front rows and a half back needed desperately, and Platt can't be allowed to leave either.
FC needs to understand with the squad as it is we are a matter of weeks away from being barely able to field a team and certainly not one capable of competing in this competition. All the good work of the last 2 years he and Potter did wilfully thrown away. Very strange.

He has restraints on him.we have to remember where we are as a club following last season, building from scratch, with sky money being withheld and players leaving and having to begin recruitment way behind other clubs. It appears FC doesn't have the budget. We have to accept that this will basically be the squad for this season while we get back on our feet.
I can't believe FC is seriously going into the season with a squad as thin as this.

Hewnce I say this squad is way too small, and these are false economies that Mssrs Khan & Sutcliffe could live to regret.

I hope langers retaining 13 doesn't mean he will be lose forward!! The starting side doesn't look bad at all, but as we all know, we just don't have enough in reserve at the min!
Can't wait for the season to start, and for the launch of the new shirts!!

.
If we do not manage to get others to add some more depth then you have a valid point.
.
The criticism of FC so early is a bit strange, lets wait and see how we look closer to the start of the season.

This is not a matter of judgement, ifs or maybes.
This squad WILL finish in the bottom 2.

Yes we need more players but the season doesn`t start till February so there is plenty of time if any are available. I`m thankful we still exist and I see FC and OK are trying to put things on an even keel. So what if we do get some hammerings, it will keep the resident troll and the so called RL supporter sh**rhino happy (glad all Rhino fans aren`t as childish), but at the end of the day we will still have a club to follow and even if we are short on numbers we still do have some quality players in the club.
PS ignore the trolls, if it helps stick 2 fingers up at the screen when they annoy, please don`t respond COYB

The point I am making is that it is a false economy to go into an SL season with a squad this thin. If Sidwell is the prop FC speaks of then I respectfully suggest we need to add at least one more besides him.

Guess Platt (18) will be so on his way IMO. Shame really because he played in some good games last year.
I think (or hope)he'll stay
