Bramley Phoenix 13, Baildon 3

Baildon's promotion prospects suffered a blow with a below-par performance at The Warrels yesterday in SSE Yorkshire Division Three.

Despite playing against 14 men for most of the match following the dismissal of the host's outside centre for a second yellow card just before half-time, the Jenny Laners failed to maintain possession or field position for long enough to create any real try-scoring opportunities.

Having opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a well-struck Jake Duxbury penalty, Baildon spent much of the rest of the first half on the back foot.

After defending their line for long periods, Baildon conceded a penalty on 22 minutes, followed by a converted try ten minutes later when Bramley's full back ghosted through the Jenny Laners' normally tight defence to score under the posts.

Baildon's tendency to kick for territory rather than keep the ball in hand proved ineffective, with both Bramley wingers and their full back returning the ball well.

Baildon's inability to break down 14-man Bramley began to frustrate the visitors, and after conceding one of a total of 14 penalties throughout the game, the Jenny Laners went further behind on 51 minutes after infringing at a ruck.

The visitors were given the chance of at least coming away with a losing bonus point ten minutes from time with the award of a penalty 25 yards out but opted to kick for touch, only to lose possession from the line-out and end up empty-handed for only the second time this season.

The result meant that third-placed Baildon swapped places with Bramley, who were in fourth place, and leaves the Jenny Laners five points behind Goole, who occupy the second automatic promotion place.
