Top of the pops! Why Bantams striker James Hanson is desperate to be a hit against Bristol Rovers

James Hanson – celebrating his last goal against Morecambe on September 18 – is seeing a mind coach to help him rediscover his scoring touch

James Hanson is determined to end his two-month goal drought to toast new daughter Lexie.

His girlfriend Jodie gave birth to their first child on Monday night – but the City frontman failed to find the net again 24 hours later in the win over Plymouth.

Hanson has been stuck on five goals for 16 games since last scoring against Morecambe. And he has enlisted the help of Cleckheaton mind coach John Muranka to help him.

As he prepared to face old team-mate Guy Branston at Bristol Rovers today, Hanson admitted the wait is getting to him.

“It is niggling away at me,” he said. “It’s the longest I’ve gone without a goal. But at least we’re winning and still up there. That’s the main thing.

“It would be worse if the team weren’t doing so well but I want to take responsibility and score more.

“I was only on five at this stage last year, so I’m still confident I can get to 15 at least.”

Hanson has played his part by leading the line but Phil Parkinson has told him he has to start scoring again to take the weight off strike partner Nahki Wells.

Hanson added: “The manager said to me after the Exeter game that obviously a lot of strikers are judged on goals, especially when you’re getting chances.

“I’ve had a couple of late so I can’t complain about that. Maybe I’ve got to be a bit more relaxed in front of goal.

“I think it goes back to the Port Vale game when I was on form and scoring at the time. I missed a couple that day and maybe I let it get to me a bit and it’s built up since then.

“But I’m sure once the first one goes in, quite a few more will follow.”

Luke Oliver credited sports psychologist Muranka for the improvement in form that earned him the player of the year accolade last season. Hanson is hoping he can do the same trick with his goal-scoring.

“He’s told me to stay positive and when you miss a chance, just forget about it.

“I’m sure the more I work with him, the more it will help.

“The gaffer is a big believer in it. If it helps people’s games by a couple of per cent then it’s worth doing.

“I’m at a good age to try it and it’s all positive stuff. I’m confident it will make a difference.”

The only reason he is keeping Connell out of the team is, basically everything else he does. NOBODY, and I do mean nobody should argue with what James brings to this team.

No, not every header finds a team mate as Fantam claims, but the majority do. He does help out defensively and not just in our box - he is our first line of defence. I have already posted where I think he needs to improve and got slated on here for it.

Many claim the chances just aren't going his way, but in the last week, both his manager and now he, himself, have said he has had chances and should be taking them. Appears that I know nothing about football.

Keep up the hard work Hanson. Your effort and commitment can't be questioned and hopefully that will result in a goal or two shortly, starting today. Hope to see the 'Bebeto' goal celebration on the FL Show tonight.

It shows all the FIFA managers on here up when plenty of opposition managers have specifically named Hanson as a big threat for what he brings, and they've mentioned this before and after games.

Compare his work rate to Thompson's recently. And its more than just running around aimlessly. GT seems like he wont put in that extra 5-10% to chase down a loose ball or force a clearance, or take a defender out of the game. Hanson does his bit to help everyone out and keep the opposition working.

It is the 4th division though which people seem to forget, many players are limited in their ability or consistency. But also think he's knackered and could do with a rest.

A striker is usually the player to take all the flack, It goes on at every club in the country.

James Hanson should not be worried by this absence of goals. They will come

His work rate in defence & attack is outstanding.

Unfortunately the majority of balls he wins in the air go to waste because there is never any one up to support him.

The supporters i speak to all appreciate what a fine, selfless job he is doing.

With James Hanson, what you see is what you get.

As a footnote, would like to see Allan Connell given more game time. Looks as though he could make things happen.

So far, good season City.

P.P. much appreciated, would just like you to get more men forward, especially when we are a goal behind.

Connell has been given his chance and has hardly "made the strikers position his" if he had he would be in the team before Hanson, several fans and managers have pointed out just what James brings to the team (yes his goals to games ratio is poor at the moment) but he does his share of defensive duties set pieces, corners,ETC we have tried any two from three (Wells,Thompson,Conn
ell) in the past and it has not produced, the last two home games Naki has spent more time on his arse trying to win free kicks (apart from the pen call against Exeter) and the ref's told him to get on with the game, so if Naki or Connell don't score they don't offer the same as Hanson does to the all round game, and Thompson seems to be the only person who thinks he's a striker.

I keep reading this crap about Reid's absence being the problem to Hanson's goal drought. Hanson has conceded (as has his manager this week) that he has had chances and not done enough. When Reid was playing, Hanson still only scored 5 goals and only 2 of them were from crosses; and I don't even think they were from Reid's boots.

So what was the problem when both Reid and Hines were playing on the wings?????

I still think that THREE Strikers up front is what is really needed. There are not enough Striking Players in and around the box. It works when the team pass the ball and work it up, with more players moving towards the box. But pumping balls up from defensive areas to a lone Striker--who has no player to head or pass the ball to--is proving useless. Defences just gain possession , and City are back under attacking pressure AGAIN!!!.

THIS IS NOT HANSON's or WELL'S FAULT.

I am glad to see that Hanson is taking a bit of responsibility for goal scoring but agree that there is not enough going on in the box. for me one of the two central midfield players should making a run, especilly when we are dominating. if they are too knackered give them a week off. its why we have a squad!

I was never not in his 'appreciation society'. My issue wasn't what he brought to the team, that was never in question, it was the lack of goals and the fact he wasn't taking his chances.

This week, he and his manager confirmed he hadn't done enough in this respect. Pleased for him that he scored today. I'm even more pleased that it was he that started the move with his pass to Thommo and, for once, managed to get into the area to finish it.

Finally, where are those Thommo knockers tonight? It was his cross that Hanson headed home. Happy to knock, but not so eager to praise...!

Like i said previously Hanson isn't a prolific scorer..i'm sure he'll get around 15 goals this season.

Obviously Hanson has missed Reidy's delivery..all in all BCFC are still in a great position...good luck to the lads today down at Bristol...i fancy we'll get at least a point. ** We shout with pride...we'll never hide...Claret and Amber.[/p]
So what was the problem when both Reid and Hines were playing on the wings?????[/p]
Well i keeping reading your crap....what's your problem with Hanson...stalking comes to mind... Because it disagrees with your view, it's not a 'shocking statement'. He's entitled to his opinion as you are yours.

You always defend Hanson, are you his brother or something?

Btw nice to see he notched yesterday, I noted Cheltenhams manager Mark Yates saying 'we know about Hanson and the threat he brings' stating they never got to grips with him.

In some respects he's limited but he does a great job, far better than some of the target men we had... Ashley Ward etc.
