Mick Potter outlook a major influence on Bradford Bulls new boy Jamie Foster
Jamie Foster will take inspiration from the words of Mick Potter as he embarks on life as a Bradford player.
The winger made his Super League debut for St Helens under the former Bulls coach against Leeds in 2010.
He went on to score 34 tries and 241 conversions for his home-town club and played in successive Grand Finals against Wigan and Leeds.
Foster has since experienced fluctuating fortunes in his career but he will never forget a pep-talk from Potter about the importance of desire.
“Mick gave me my breakthrough and I remember him once sitting down with all the Saints players and saying ‘talent is overrated’,” recalled Foster.
“We all looked at each other and thought ‘is he for real?’
“But looking back, Mick was right – talent is so overrated. If you’re not willing to put the work in then you won’t win games, it’s that simple.”
Bulls coach Francis Cummins has similarly spoken about the need for his players to “invest in their careers” and show the right attitude.
Foster said: “Wigan weren’t the biggest force until a few seasons ago when Michael Maguire arrived. It was the same players, he just turned it around and they kicked on.
“That’s what happens in sport. Sometimes you can look too much into it, saying you need to be signing this player and that player. It’s about getting the basics right and that means working hard first and foremost.”
