The district’s runners held their own among thousands from across the district in the speedy Abbey Dash 10K round Leeds city centre in support of Age UK.

A strIng of personal records were smashed as more than 7,300 runners took advantage of the race’s notoriously quick conditions.

The men’s race was won by Leeds City AC’s Luke Cragg in a superb time of 29min 29sec, while first place in the women’s race was taken by Alyson Dixon of Chester le Street.

Of the district’s runners, Rachel Bamford (Otley AC) finished a fantastic ninth in the women’s race in 34min 59sec, while team-mate Matthew John was highest of the district’s men’s finishers, taking 53rd place in 31min 53sec - a personal best by a considerable margin of 74 seconds.

Kevin Ogden (Spenborough & District AC) continued his good form of late, finishing 72nd in 32:24, while Bingley Harrier Lee Athersmith finished in 33:02, giving him 92nd place overall.

Ilkley’s Mark Hall, meanwhile, took second place in men's over-50s in an outstanding time of 33:30, which give him 113th place overall.

A host of Saltaire Striders achieved personal bests in the race, after being led home by the impressive Simon Pass, who finished ninth in the men's over-40s race and 114th overall in 33:31.

He was followed closely by Bradford & Airedale’s Matthew Nowell, who came home in just eight seconds later in 118th place.

Quentin Lewis, of Baildon Runners, and Saltaire’s Will Kerr also capped off fantastic performances with 135th and 137th overall, giving them 16th and 17th places in the men's over-35s.

Lewis finished the race in 34:05, and while Kerr’s time of 34:07 was not a personal best, it was his fastest for 13 years.

Jill McDougall, of Baildon, finished the women's over-65s in second place in 58min 14sec, while Beth Massey (38:29) and Debbie Bland (45:12) finished third in the women’s over-40s and women’s over-55s respectively.

Elsewhere, Ilkley’s Geoffrey Howard (39:16) claimed second in the men's over-65s and Baildon’s James Parrish (56:57) third in the men's over-75s.
