Agony and ecstasy for Bradford City penalty heroes

City were left counting the cost of another dramatic cup triumph after suffering two more injuries.

Phil Parkinson will launch an urgent bid for reinforcements after Zavon Hines (ankle ligaments) and James Meredith (hip) were added to the casualty list following a rollercoaster FA Cup replay against Northampton.

Parkinson was keen not to knock off the gloss from the latest knock-out victory, which was almost inevitably secured from penalties. Carl McHugh’s header clinched a 3-3 draw with the final touch of extra-time before City won 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Their eighth straight shoot-out success booked a second-round home clash with League One Brentford on December 1.

But seeing City’s options further depleted by this latest double blow means shoring up numbers before the loan deadline two days before then will be a priority.

Parkinson said: “I had a meeting with the two chairmen last week and told them the most important period was between now and January.

“With the amount of games we’ve played, we’re going to need more players to get us through this. We ummed and aahed about it but now we’ve got to do it.

“As much as we’re pleased to go through, my mind in extra-time was thinking about who we’re going to bring in. We’re going to need reinforcements because we’re getting very low.

“We’ve got a terrific group of lads but they need help. Stephen Darby’s carrying an injury, Meredith and Hines have gone off and we have to get people in.”

City had twice led during 90 minutes. Will Atkinson put them ahead in the first half before Ishmel Demontagnac levelled from the penalty spot – straight after the home side felt they should have had a penalty for a pull on Adam Baker when the young striker was through.

Parkinson said: “That should have been a red card and a penalty. The ref told me at half-time that he (Baker) was too honest and stayed on his feet.

“Every week we watch Match of the Day and the pundits are talking about players diving and the ref’s telling me he should have gone down.

“Maybe it was a bit of naivety from Adam’s part but I feel the ref should have been able to judge that he was impeded.”

Nahki Wells thought he had won it with his 13th goal of the season from the spot with only two minutes left but Clive Platt sent the game into the extra half hour.

Kelvin Langmead then curled Northampton in front after 109 minutes but City, who had to play the second extra-time period with ten men, rescued it through teenager McHugh in injury time.

Parkinson admitted: “These lads never know when they are beaten. Once again you’ve seen the immense character in the team and they just keep going.

“We’ve got some record with shoot-outs. You could feel the confidence from the supporters and players.

“They kept cool heads again. When you’ve been in that position a few times, the experience has got to help you.”

I hope the injuries are not too bad, I think we have two fantastic fullbacks in Meredith and Darby so should we lose these two on top of the two centre halves our promotion chances will be really stretched. Well done lads last night, we were bullied all the way through the match but never gave up. Wow they were a big side!

It's a nice problem to have, but will we struggle to field a cup team if we've got a load of loan players who, presumably, are cup-tied.

Mind you there's not many teams left in the league cup, so perhaps they won't mind them playing - or does 'cup-tied' apply across all cup competitions?

we need a new FA system setting up with some ex players and managers who know the game.

The problem is most young players available for loan will have already featured for their parent teams in the cups earlier stages. Meaning they are now cup tied and cannot play for any other team. If these injuries are long term we are really going to struggle with all these cup games.

Oh, here he goes again with the same record. We lost a left-back and a winger. Where does Hannah fit in with those positions? It is better to leave him where he is, continue letting Grim pay his wages and we can then use that money to pay for a player WE DO NEED!!

Now if Wells or Connell were to be out for a few weeks, that's a different story.

I saw a tweet from Reid last night that suggested he is hoping to be back MUCH sooner than originally thought and he is hoping to be involved soon. He is training the rest of this week and will review again.

Is this his way of saying there may be a surprise for us on Saturday?

This was a fantastic game. Although the crowd was sparse, the game was excellent and the entertainment also.

How they were given that penalty I will never know. The lad was falling over before he went into the box. He was almost at 45degrees as he entered the box and the contact was more him leaning in and our player leaning against him..!

All the boys played very well, but big shout-outs to Darby, Atkinson, Hanson and Connell, who were all fantastic. Don't get me wrong, they all made a mistake or two, but overall, they were superb and epitomised everything good about our club at the moment (a handful with lots of battling qualities yet creative and very exciting)

Although we have players who can come back in, I hope the injuries aren't too bad.

Are all these games a pre-requisite for next season when we have to play lots of Inter-toto games (after qualifying from the League Cup)? LOL

Also James Hanson was terrific in the first half, despite putting his usual "shift" in i felt he tired as the game wore on.Then again not suprising as he has hardly trained following the virus he was suffering last week.

My point Pleb is that as he has had under 10 starts for us and only a handful of subsitute appearances it is hard to evaluate his full potential. Although not picking him parkinson is often singing the lads praises over his abilties and attitude. When ever he has played he has always given one hundred percent and doesn't deserve your abuse.I would like nothing more than another league club to take a punt on Ross and him to succeed so he can stick his fingers up to plebs like you

Yet another Blockbusting Sensational prediction come true by Balbrigganfc.

Nobody makes predictions like me, nobody. Long way back to Northampton, they must have been gutted HA!
Nobody has seen your predictions on here until after the event balbrigganfc. It's not a very good prediction if you fail to share it with the very people you are boasting to. I will believe them when you put them on here so we can say wow this guy knows what he's talking about so until then stop the bragging balbrigganfc. Unless you on make the predictions in your own head then keep it to your self.
