Wigan v Bantams: Darby on the defensive

Stephen Darby insists City are not simply making up the numbers at Wigan.

The former Liverpool trainee will come in to the rebuilt back four in the light of the injuries to Luke Oliver and Andrew Davies.

With teenager Carl McHugh also set to play, there is a makeshift look to a defence that can expect a severe test from their Premier League hosts.

But Darby, who netted the extra-time winner against Burton to book City’s place in the last 16, is confident they can put up a genuine fight.

He said: “We’ve come this far and we’re going to enjoy it. But we also believe in ourselves.

“Wigan are a great side but it’s 11 against 11 and we’re not just going to turn up to make up the numbers.

“It’s a big blow losing the two centre halves because they’ve been solid for us all season but we’ve still got experience in the side and it’s a chance for a couple of the lads to come in and do well.”

I can’t remember too many games in my career as a player or manager when we’ve taken 5,000 supporters. It’s a night we’ve got to enjoy.”
