Volunteeers get stuck into giving the changing rooms a welcome face-lift
Birkenshaw Rugby League Club were presented with a cheque for £1,000 at the recent RFL Engage Mutual Volunteer Awards as part of the “engage with your club” programme organised by former Super League title sponsor Engage Mutual.
The aim of the initiative is to help clubs recruit a volunteer workforce and affordably improve their facilities by holding action events.
Birkenshaw members set about a successful renovation of their changing facilities. Walls and floors were scrubbed and painted and tiles were replaced and regrouted.
Speaking of the programme, coach Simon Armitage said: “Through the engage with your club programme we were able to take advantage of an existing club event and turn it into an opportunity whereby our changing rooms were tidied up and made respectable again for the forthcoming season.
“What we got done in a day would have taken us weeks to achieve so the profile of the programme helped us enormously. We’d definitely look to support any future initiatives.”
Birkenshaw Rugby League Club was one of 31 community rugby league clubs across the UK to hold an action weekend, at which players, fans, coaches and members of the local community were invited to lend a hand and help improve the facilities.
