Poor first half costly for Silsden

Kevin Ryan’s goal set up a tense finale Kevin Ryan’s goal set up a tense finale

Cheadle Town 3, Silsden 2

Silsden’s involvement in the North West Counties League Cup was brief as they slumped to defeat in leafy Cheshire following a shocking first-half display.

The Cobbydalers, who as a Premier Division outfit only came into the competition in the second round, were 3-1 down at Division One hosts Cheadle Town by the interval.

They improved after the break but still fell at the first hurdle.

Cheadle took the lead in the tenth minute, Matthew German scoring directly from a corner, and Ben Brooks doubled their lead midway through the half.

A free-kick led to Mike Garrod halving the deficit for Silsden but Arran Carroll netted from the penalty spot two minutes later after Cobbydalers keeper Edward Hall had brought an attacker down in the area.

The visitors enjoyed more possession in the second half but had to wait until Kevin Ryan’s 73rd-minute strike to set up a tense finale.

They had a very good chance to level the tie in the last minute but Cheadle held on for a deserved victory.
