A WHIRLWIND innings from Sarfraz Ahmed hit Pudsey St Lawrence for six and helped knock them off the top of the Premier Division table in the All Rounder Cricket Bradford Premier League.

Sarfraz smashed an unbeaten 62 from just 23 balls as Woodlands inflicted an 88-run defeat on the defending champions – their third loss in a row – with Hanging Heaton taking the lead in the title race with an 85-run win over bottom team Scholes.

Woodlands openers Tim Jackson (40) and Sam Frankland (30) started briskly before the innings stalled as the St Lawrence spinners joined the attack.

After a quiet start, Alex Atkinson upped the tempo with five sixes and three fours in his 57 – but it was the arrival of Sarfraz that changed the complexion of the game.

Sarfraz, in his 16th and final season with the club, made Atkinson's innings look pedestrian as he launched a succession of blows out of the ground.

The Woodlands total of 241-5 exceeded the expectations of even the most optimistic of their followers.

St Lawrence knew they faced a big challenge and when spinner Chris Brice entered the attack and got three lbw decisions in his first over, they knew it was not going to be their day.

Adam Waite battled for his 38, while Richie Lamb provided some late defiance with a breezy 50, but Saints were dismissed for 153. Brice finished with 5-44 and fellow spinner Kez Ahmed 3-32.

Another spinner among the wickets was Hanging Heaton overseas player Mohammad Rameez. He took 5-14 as his side bowled Scholes out for 118 in reply to their total of 203-8.

Opener Nick Connolly (60) and Joe Fraser (58) led the way, while former Hanging Heaton player James Stansfield took 4-55 for Scholes.

The individual performance of the day came from New Farnley's former Derbyshire and Durham player Lee Goddard. He made a stunning 151 not out against East Bierley, the club he captained to victory in the 2012 Priestley Cup final.

Four sixes and 17 fours flowed from the bat of Goddard as he dominated the New Farnley innings of 279-6. The next highest scorer was Rishy Limbechaya with 31 not out.

Awaise Ejaz took 3-81 for East Bierley, who were bowled out for 198. Mark Gill (32) top scored as Mohammad Bilal picked up 3-30 to seal an 81-run verdict.

Farsley are the dark horses in the title race. They are just 19 points behind new leaders Hanging Heaton after their comfortable seven-wicket over Pudsey Congs.

Second-bottom Congs were skittled for just 99, a score that would have looked even sadder if it had not been for a determined innings of 64 from former Farsley batsman Joe Greaves. Yorkshire youngster James Wainman took 3-28 and Adam Ahmed (3-8).

Wainman (36no) and skipper James Price (30) ensured that Farsley wrapped up victory with the minimum of fuss.

Congs are now five points adrift of Morley, who suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Lightcliffe.

Openers Ian Philliskirk (88) and Alex Stead (62) shared a first-wicket alliance of 117 as Morley's total of 203-8 was passed with 33 balls to spare. Jonathan Wilson was unbeaten on 44 when victory was achieved.

Morley's score was built around the contributions of their three experienced batsmen – Matt Baxter (60), Kashif Naveed (46) and Colin Nuthall (30). Suleman Khan picked up 3-61 with his left-arm spin for Lightcliffe.

Curtis Free (4-34) and Sam Wilson (3-21) impressed as Cleckheaton bowled out Bradford & Bingley for 162 to secure a 44-run win.

Free was particularly deadly with the new ball as he reduced the visitors to 12-3 and, despite the efforts of David Clow (45) and skipper Scott Etherington (33), they never really recovered.

Cleckheaton's 206-8 was built around the efforts of John Wood (38), Free (36) and Mohammad Zaman (30), while spinner Noman Ali took 4-46 for Bradford & Bingley.
