9:24pm

Sub Jordan Bove's late goal sent City out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round at Oldham tonight.

Penalties beckoned until Carl Winchester's fierce cross-shot was parried by Jordan Pickford, allowing Bove to hammer in the rebound.

City, who gave a debut to defender Christopher Routis, had held their own up to that point. Their best chance came from a Mark Yeates drive that hit the post.

9:21pm

And that's it folks. No Wembley trip in the JPT for City for another year

9:21pm

Hanson's flick-on creates half-chance for Bennett but the loan man cannot find his way through the blue shirts

9:18pm

Ambitious shout of "Wemberley" by one Oldham fan in front the press box. City have three added minutes to force penalties...

9:17pm

Oldham make a sub - Brian Wilson replaced by Brown

9:17pm

Winchester's cross-shot is parried by Pickford and sub BOVE hammers home

9:16pm

Oldham take the lead with two minutes left!

9:14pm

Yeates gets a silly booking for kicking the corner flag ...

9:11pm

Don't forget there is no extra-time in the JPT... penalties beckoning??

9:09pm

Oldham make their first subs as Dieng replaces Morgan-Smith and Bove comes on for Dayton

9:08pm

Sheehan corner picks out Hanson but he's blocked off by James Wilson and cannot make a proper contact on header

9:07pm

City corner in front of their own fans

9:07pm

Parkinson having a few animated words with the assistant - and the home fans behind the dug-out chip in with their views on the City manager

9:03pm

Yeates switches to left of midfield and immediately tries to jink his way through.

9:02pm

City make their final sub as Meredith makes way for Clarke

8:59pm

Corner for Oldham and a first proper shout from the main stand

8:58pm

The build-up was much better than the free-kick from Mills which flies high into the stand

8:58pm

Free-kick for Oldham yard outside corner of box and finally ref gets his spray out. We've only waited 70 minutes!

8:56pm

Here they come. No shocks who's going off - McBurnie and Mclean

8:55pm

Big guns about to be rolled out. Hanson and Bennett ready to enter the fray

8:53pm

Oldham trying to respond after City strong start to half. Pickford saves above his head from Winchester

8:52pm

McArdle heads it clear with minimum of fuss

8:52pm

Free-kick for Oldham level with City box - but disappointingly still no spray!

8:50pm

Dolan catches Dayton just over the half-way line and receives the night's first booking

8:46pm

Ball cannons to the right where Darby drills the cross back in and Mclean heads wide

8:46pm

The Irishman has had a quiet one so far but that was as close as we've been to a goal...

8:45pm

Bright start to second half continues as Yeates smacks low 20-yarder against the post ....

8:43pm

8:41pm

Mclean cross is half-blocked by Elokobi and the ball pops up to Kennedy whose near-post drive is blocked again by the centre half

8:40pm

Crowd is 2,535 with 660 from City

8:38pm

Not quite happening for McBurnie at the moment. Mclean's been less effective alongside him... can see some big-hitters coming off the bench later

8:35pm

Painful blow for Oldham defender Mills but he might have saved a goal there. Sheehan cross drops to Kennedy who really gets hold of shot inside box - and it smacks into the home player before deflecting wide

8:33pm

The teams are back and off we go again...

8:33pm

0-0. Still on for 4 trips to Wembley and 4th in the league. #bcafc

8:31pm

Congratulations to City fan Paul Jarvis and his missus on the birth of Billy Knott James Hanson Jarvis this morning.... Safe to say that Dad chose the name!!

8:30pm

@ParkerTandA a good music selection at half time, maybe the highlight so far.

— Bradford City Gaz(@BCGaz) September 2, 2014

8:28pm

City director Roger Owen has won a raffle prize ... and donated it back to the fans

8:23pm

All very well interviewing new signing Dominic Poleon at half-time - if you can hear him. Booming questions from man with the mic drowned out the player.

8:17pm

And that's it for the first half...

8:16pm

One minute of added time. No hold-ups so far - so no sign of the spray!

8:15pm

McBurnie given away a few fouls. Might test the referee's patience if he's not careful

8:13pm

Chance for Oldham as Winchester's dinked cross is nodded down and wide by Morgan-Smith. Three minutes until the break

8:12pm

Been impressed with Routis so far.

8:06pm

McArdle hits the post after Routis nods back deep free-kick from Sheehan. Unfortunately it was too deep and the Frenchman was ruled out of play when he retrieved the ball

8:04pm

Real end to end game this. Sadly not in an edge of your seat thriller sort of way #oafc v #bcafc

— Boredbantam(@Ianhirst666) September 2, 2014

8:01pm

Another decent cross from Sheehan picks out Kennedy who heads over

8:00pm

Still no sign of that vanishing spray...

7:57pm

It  looked to have taken a City touch but ref ignores Oldham protests and gives goal kick

7:57pm

Clever move from Oldham as Winchester works ball in to Dayton, whose shot on the turn just beats the far post with Pickford scrambling.

7:55pm

City corner comes out as far as Routis who tries a first-time shot but slices horribly

7:55pm

Long ball from Darby catches out Oldham defence and Mclean slips in behind. But it doesn't really come down for him and James Wilson is able to make a goal-saving block..

7:53pm

Thumbs up from Phil Parkinson to the away end as they sing his name

7:50pm

Routis wins the cross over James Wilson, who is left rubbing his head

7:50pm

Routis wins the cross over James Wilson, who is left rubbing his head

7:49pm

First corner for the home team

7:49pm

Dolan has a ping at the other end but Rachubka watches it comfortably wide

7:46pm

First shot on target after 15 minutes, Philliskirk driving low and straight at Pickford from 25 yards

7:45pm

City fans making far more noise than the locals

7:44pm

That was a decent chance for the teenager and judging from his reaction, he knew it

7:43pm

McBurnie so close to his first senior goal, flicking header wide from Sheehan corner. Another spot-on delivery from the defender

7:42pm

Chorus of Midland Road strikes up from high above Jordan Pickford's goal. Right on cue, City win another corner

7:40pm

Dangerous cross from Brian Wilson which McArdle manages to smuggle back to Pickford.

7:39pm

Pickford has to hurry to clear backpass from Routis as Morgan-Smith closes in

7:36pm

Two blue heads get Sheehan kick away...

7:35pm

Sheehan cross forces Elokobi into an uncomfortable clearance behind. First corner of the game

7:34pm

McArdle with a decisive diving header to clear early Oldham cross. Ball rescued from the empty stand that is still being built

7:32pm

Waiting for a free-kick and the first use of the "magic spray" at a City game. It's a Premier League and Johnstone's Paint thing....

7:30pm

And Oldham get us going...

7:30pm

Great to see McBurnieplay again tonight. Impressive when he came on against Leeds. #bcafc

— Mark Hainsworth(@bcafcmark) September 2, 2014

7:05pm

Only five on the bench in the JPT but City have plenty of firepower there with Hanson, Bennett and Clarke as well as Billy Knott.

7:04pm

Oldham v Bradford tonight! Last match before I go to Uni, big win and road to Wembley!⚽️✌️ #oafc #bcafc #JPT

7:03pm

@oli_mcburnie to score first. I'd put my house on it. Well maybe not my house, but it's definitely worth the £3.55 in my pocket. #bcafc

Have to agree with pablo, we are very light weight up front, Mclean does a lot of running but no end product and as ive already stated McBurnie isnt and wont be good enough for this level. Shame as it would be great to see a young player make it.Yeates is another player we could have done with getting off our wage bill but hes contracted for another year.Lets hope some of the leeds money can be used on a couple of loan signings.

More important to beat Yeovil on Saturday and Oldham away in the League game later this year than this third rated Cup competition...Milton Keynes away in the League Cup is by far more important as well as victory leads to the last 16 and a potential home match against a top Premier League outfit....need McLean to hit goal trail quickly!

The 'Leeds money' will be used to offset this supposed 'deficit' we have. Still, at least we won't have to start 'pimping' Hanson until next Christmas!!

I suppose that is always the risk you take when you set up not to lose, rather than try to win! I understand some players needed resting and others needed game time, but why play a left-back in midfield? Has Sharif now gone as he wasn't involved at all?

What it does show is that we need at least 1 more goalscorer. For all our possession, we rarely threatened their goal. Mclean continues to get the flack (on here and on other message boards), but McBurnie rarely tests the keeper either. Between them they aren't doing enough to press Hanson, Clarke & Bennett (and you could argue that the latter needs to deliver more too)....!

It's never nice to go out of any competition at the first hurdle, but looking at the team formation, I don't think this game was a high priority for PP. And, to be fair, other competitions and games are the priority. No doubt the match and performances will have given him a few pointers to areas in the team where he feels we are short, because it seems he's set to bring in a loanee or two from next week. Getting to Wembley again would be great, but, who knows we could still be back again this season!
