WYKE under-16s travelled to Scarborough Pirates in the penultimate round of fixtures, needing at least a draw to ensure becoming Yorkshire Junior League Division Four champions, and achieved it via a 22-22 scoreline.

The hosts took an early lead but Bradford Bulls Scholarship player Tevin Campbell was put in by skipper Jordan Payton to make it 6-6.

Chances for Wyke to take charge slipped away and the Pirates reached half-time 12-6 ahead.

But with the half-time team talk of Dean Smith, Gary Wills and James Dewhirst ringing in their ears, Thomas Oxley scored a try after good work by Coby Kittsen.

Trailing 12-10, the visitors again let Scarborough in but Kittsen scooted over for a converted try that bought them back to just two points adrift.

Scarborough then scored a controversial try out wide. Payton's score by the posts hauled Wyke back to 22-20 and, with the two first-choice kickers off the field, Kittsen landed the vital penalty that earned Wyke a draw.

Wyke's under-14s had already beaten Selby Warriors 32-6 earlier in the season in a quarter-final of the Continuation Cup but lost 34-22 there in the league.

A try by captain Sebastian Blanco, improved by Ben Proctor, put Wyke 6-0 ahead but they conceded the next 22 points before tries by Brad Emerson and Cameron Scott reduced the deficit to 22-16 at half-time.

A wonderful solo try by stand-off Scott, which Proctor goalled, levelled the scores but depleted Wyke were running on empty and conceded late tries.

Connor Fawcett was Wyke's man of the match and parents' player, while Blanco was the top tackler. Emerson won the coaches' award and Scott was Selby's pick as man of the match.
