BOTH goalkeepers were doubtless grateful that the fourth annual Clare Lyness Challenge Cup did not go, as the last two matches had, to extra time and penalties.

Chrissy Silberberg (Bingley Bees Ladies) and her counterpart from West Yorkshire Police were in sweltering protective gear on a hot, sunny day and wanted the contest at Bradford Girls' Grammar School over in 70 minutes

Their wishes were thankfully granted as the Police Ladies won 2-1.

The match started with a 30 second round of applause in honour of Clare, followed by three cheers from players and officials.

Mel Burgess hit a post for the Bees early on, but both goalkeepers were on form and there were no goals in the first half.

Cath Gallimore (West Yorkshire Police) and Burgess gave uplifting half-time team talks, and Wes Yorkshire Police were soon rewarded when a long cross was fired into the D, where Amy Parson was waiting on the back post to slot the ball home.

The Bees responded with a penalty corner. The first strike was saved by the West Yorkshire keeper and they were unable to convert the rebound.

The Bingley team were then punished for pushing forward, West Yorkshire Police breaking and Gallimore making it 2-0.

However, the Bees were rewarded minutes later when Lillian Allen received a pass from a free hit outside the D and had enough time to cross the line and fire in an unstoppable shot.

Striving for a 2-2 draw, however, they conceded a third goal near the end as West Yorkshire Police regained the trophy.

It was presented to Gallimore by Clare’s partner Stella Clarke on behalf of the family, with thanks for the continued support of both teams in keeping the event and Clare’s memory alive.

The game was followed by a barbecue at Bradford & Bingley Sports Club, where a collection was made for Sue Ryder and Manorlands, who supported Clare and her family while she bravely battled breast cancer.
