Bradford Bulls: Lee Gaskell plots winning return to Saints

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Lee Gaskell in action for the Bulls against Catalan at the weekend Lee Gaskell in action for the Bulls against Catalan at the weekend

LEE Gaskell has revealed he could stay at the Bulls next season as he targeted a winning return to home-town club St Helens on Friday.

With relegation almost a certainty for Bradford, a number of Jimmy Lowes' squad look set to depart at the end of the season – but Gaskell is willing to stay put.

The former Saints starlet impressed in the halves alongside Luke Gale during Sunday's narrow defeat to Catalan and is currently talking to the club about a contract for next year.

"I've had a few talks with Bradford about staying here, even if we are in the Championship," said Gaskell.

"They have been good to me so I have not spoken to any other clubs or looked elsewhere. I just want to concentrate on Bradford."

Gaskell said he is focusing on building on the improved display against Catalan ahead of this week's showdown at Langtree Park.

The 23-year-old stand-off will come up against his former club at their new home for the first time.

Gaskell, who spent the majority of last season on loan at Salford, explained: "This will be the first time I have played against Saints at Langtree Park.

"A lot of my friends and family support St Helens and I still live in the town, so it will be nice to go back there and play.

"I was very young when I joined Saints, about nine or ten, and it's a club I've always been involved in.

"It will be a bit of a strange feeling going back there but it will also be very special because of my connections to the club.

"I know they lost on Sunday at Hull KR but they have got a great set of lads and have brought through a lot of home-grown players.

"St Helens is a place where you are brought up on rugby league from an early age and young lads want to go on and play for them."

Gaskell says the Bulls took a major confidence boost from their display against Catalan on Sunday in Lowes' first home match in charge.

He said: "The boys showed a lot of intensity in that match. Jimmy asked for that effort from the first minute to last and we did that.

"If we play with that commitment and intensity, then we have the players to deliver. That's the benchmark now and we have to stick to it.

"The forwards laid the platform and it's a lot easier when the pack play like that. That's our job, that's what we get paid for, and we should be doing that anyway.

"Jimmy has come in and given us some fresh ideas. You could see in the performance that the boys were really up for it."

Not sure what your point is there BB.
He has said what he hopes will happen, and it's obvious that everything in life is dependant on what is of benefit to the individuals concerned?
So unless you have some prior knowledge as to what any deal might be to attract or keep players! Speculation is pointless, as it only gives the idiot trolls something to carp on about, ad nauseum.
Sorry for having a go at you, not your fault because we all feel frustrated at the seemingly lack of movement. However at least Gaskell and O'Brian have nailed their colours to the mast?

No offence taken,
It would be nice to here from the club who is staying and who is going,
Also most important of all who is coming.
I take it this is a hint gaskell is staying and if O Brian is I am happy with that too,
I take it Gail is going, as is Foster presumably and a few more.
If we could keep Kearney that would be awesome.
It also looks as if Williams could stay on a perm deal.

Knowing what is happening would make the inevitable easier to bear.

He's a very good player and I hope he stays. Suspect Gale is going but I don't think he's pulled up any trees to cry over him, but the harsh fact is a lot of our guys are in this position because they are defensively weak and may not have too many takers for their services. Really hope we keep Donno, and O'Brien.

Gaskell can go for me. Has anyone seen his body language he never looks interested, he mopes about like a spoiled child. He can't catch a ball and defensively he is awful, with the occasional "ok" attacking spell, that has only been at stand-off and on the back of Gale setting him up. Having said that he might be good enough for the championship.

Plus instead of all this insane rubbish from the players, like "he targeted a winning return to home-town club St Helens on Friday" why don't the players just turn up and try their very best. Words are cheap actions are not.

I've heard that too. Also heard Addy and Olbison to Huddersfield and Donno to Wigan. We also may have signed Jason Crookes for a second spell. We'll do well to keep any of the 'decent' prospects in the squad. I really do think we'll have to start rebuilding from the ground up where the playing staff are concerned. Might not be a bad thing.

Signing wingers (Crookes) would not be a priority to me. He started to come good for us a couple of years ago then jumped ship. He is nothing special. Don't think donno is good enough for wigan . I hope he stays.

We all need to be prepared for a mass exodus. If a player can get another SL club then good luck to them.

It is clear why we sacked Franny and brought Jimmy in now. He needs to work with them for a few weeks so he can decide who to try and keep and who to let go and even encourage to leave. I think we do need to start from scratch again but keeping a hand full of the decent players. Jason Crookes would be OK by me. He was doing well before he left. I believe Kear will leave. I would like to keep Kearney (captain), Purtell, George and also give Henry a year with Jimmy. We would have a decent back line if we can also sign Wilson.
In the forwards it would be great to keep Manu, Fakir, Sidlow and Pitts along with our own home grown lads but some will inevitably leave.

It all depends if Green is willing to spend the same money that we are spending this year and use the same "creative" accounting to make it look like we are under the championship cap. We will have considerably more cash next year as well as the parachute payment.

Jimmy has a vital next few weeks persuading some lads to stick with us.

Can't see sidlow, fakir or manu getting a SL offer so should stay. I think Gale and gaskill would be very good in the championship. Neither have done enough for a SL contract IMO. Think Kearney and purtell will stay because we might be their best offer. Hope Potts stays but he has another year at hull I think.

Totally agree BB.
Every SL club is making plans, and we are still in Limbo.
But COYB , let's hope we can keep up the atmosphere that we saw on Sunday.

The fact that Lee is prepared to commit to the club even if we are relegated
is very encouraging news. Hopefully more of the current team will follow his example and allow Jimmy the opportunity to add to the squad to enable the club to return to its former glories. As s general comment, how refreshing is to hear a player acknowledge what the club has done for them and to want to repay them by remaining loyal. Some others who have abandoned ship in recent times please take note

The sad thing for me and it shows how poor our coaching has been since Brain smith and Matthew Elliott left is how many of our players have gone on to improve once they have left the club.

Noble told us Paul Anderson was past it, Leon Pryce wasn't a stand off, JAmie Peacock was just about past it!!! Chris Bridge, Ryan Atkins, Brett Ferres weren't worth keeping, same with Lee Gilmore.
Not one single player McNamarra brought in i.e Sherrife, Worrincy, Platt, Topou, Solomana, Feather, jeffries, got any better under us, most got worse!
Potter didn't fare any better Matt Orford, Glen Hall, Danny Sculthorpe, what ever happened to Dave Halley? Hargreaves got worse and even lost his appetite for playing rugby! Ah Van improved when he left. Herbert looked like he'd never seen a rugby ball. Why was Shad Royston or Vinny Finnigan released?
Cummins was up against it but it's no suprise that Bateman, Whitehead etc all look better at other clubs.
I hope all this is a thing of the past and that Lowes can finally IMPROVE Players the way Smith or Elliot did.

Can anyone remember one player that got better under our coaching or one that got worse once they left (except for Stuart Fielden) and that was prob down to injury rather than bad coaching
