Yorkshire batting collapse hands Durham victory

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Adil Rashid was the pick of Yorkshire's bowlers with 3-14 Adil Rashid was the pick of Yorkshire's bowlers with 3-14

YORKSHIRE Vikings failed to overhaul a modest target for the second time in three NatWest T20 Blast games as they were dismissed for just 95 to suffer a 28-run defeat to Durham Jets.

After suffering a 22-run loss to Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Saturday, having failed to reach a victory target of 144, their batting failed again as they searched for the win that would have propelled them to third in the North Group table.

Chasing Durham's modest total of 123-9 after the visitors won the toss and decided to bat, Yorkshire were all out in 17.2 overs after losing nine wickets for 48 runs – narrowly beating their lowest-ever T20 total of 90-9 against Durham at Chester-le-Street in 2009.

Yorkshire's demise was all the harder to take after Adil Rashid dropped last man Chris Rushworth off his own bowling from the final ball of the 17th over with Durham on 94-9.

That escape allowed Rushworth to team up with Gareth Breese, who finished unbeaten on 30 off 19 balls, and add a crucial 29 runs that allowed them to secure a surprise victory.

Until that point, Yorkshire's spinners had appeared to laid the foundations for victory with Rashid's leg-spin and the off-spin of Azeem Rafiq, who claimed a combined 6-34 from their eight overs.

Rafiq finished with 3-20, his best return since claiming career-best figures of 3-15 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2011, while Rashid grabbed 3-14 as Durham struggled to set a competitive total on a dry wicket.

Yorkshire raced to 47-1 in the sixth over but the loss of Alex Lees, bowled off his pad by John Hastings, set off a stunning collapse that set the scene for Durham's shock triumph.

Scott Borthwick, Durham's leg-spinning all-rounder, finished with 2-11 as Yorkshire's innings ended in farce when Ryan Sidebottom was run out attempting a third run.

It leaves Yorkshire needing to bounce back quickly against group leaders Worcestershire Rapids at New Road on Friday night.
