Alex Lees column: I think our innings win over Warwickshire in the County Championship at Edgbaston last week was one of the best all-round team performances that we’ve produced in the last couple of seasons.

With the players we had missing for one reason or another and the players we had coming in, everybody stepped up and performed well.

We were happy with all aspects of our game – our batting, bowling and catching.

We created chances and caught well, which is a big part of the game. We need to make sure we carry on doing that for the rest of the season if we want to be up there.

I ended at first slip for a while with Aaron Finch off the field for his tweaked groin and I took a couple of catches. Although I think I’m settled in at third slip, I’ll quite happily slot in and catch anywhere.

I enjoyed my time at first, though, as it gave me a few more MVP points!

We want to plough forward now and keep putting in performances like that to make sure that we’re there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

On the flipside, our Twenty20 defeat against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Saturday was very disappointing, particularly so because we bowled brilliantly in the first innings to restrict them to a total (143-9) that we thought was 20-plus below par.

Unfortunately, it was a woeful run chase, and we’ve got to move on quickly and go into Tuesday and Wednesday's matches against Leicestershire and Durham at Headingley feeling refreshed.

I don’t know if they are must-win yet but they are big games. We’re backing ourselves to come up with two big results, which would put us back up near the top of the table again. We’re not worried at the minute.

Maybe we were a little bit too positive at the start of our innings and you can get caught in between a bit chasing that kind of target. Had we managed to get one big partnership together, we would have won the game.

Me and Tim Bresnan could have won it through the middle but I didn’t play the best shot and got out. You are always fighting an uphill battle from there (69-5 in the 13th over).

I’m happy with both sides of my batting at the minute going into the second half of the season when, generally, the wickets improve. I feel my game’s pretty similar in T20 and Championship cricket.

The mindset is just a little bit different in T20 cricket, where you are a bit more focused on your ones and twos. I’ve been working on using low risk options, and thankfully that’s been successful up until now.
