Adam Lyth continued his consistent season with a fifth half-century of the County Championship summer to help Yorkshire progress on the second day of their match with Sussex at Arundel.

The Whitby-born left-hander was dismissed for 66 shortly before tea as Yorkshire reached 131-2, still trailing Sussex by 185 runs.

Lyth used all his experience during excellent spells from Steve Magoffin, Sussex’s Australian seamer, and James Tredwell, the Kent off-spinner making his debut on loan, when they conceded only 12 runs in 9.3 overs after lunch.

But he came through that testing period to hit six fours and two sixes during a two-hour stay at the crease and forged a 73-run stand with youngster Jack Leaning.

That partnership helped Yorkshire overcome the loss of Alex Lees in the over before lunch after he had helped compile a careful 56-run opening stand with Lyth, but was dismissed for 22 after Magoffin won an lbw appeal.

Sussex had earlier added only 16 runs to their total before Jon Lewis edged Jack Brooks to Aaron Finch at first slip for 61, which included eight fours and helped Sussex add a handy 68 runs for the final wicket with Lewis Hatchett.

Magoffin immediately tested both Yorkshire openers with a new-ball spell of 6-4-6-0 and by the time he was rested after lunch, he had amazing figures of 13-9-8-1.

But he returned shortly before tea to claim the key wicket of Lyth, who mistimed an attempted pull off Magoffin to Lewis at fine leg.
