Yorkshire demonstrated the determination of their attack to claim six wickets in the afternoon session to take control of their championship match against Sussex at Arundel.

Having lost Liam Plunkett on England duty, Ryan Sidebottom to a hamstring strain and Adil Rashid to paternity leave, Yorkshire’s attack appeared to be struggling when Sussex reached 104-1 at lunch after winning the toss.

But they used the interval wisely to regroup and claimed five for 55 in 21 overs before Richard Pyrah claimed a bonus wicket only two balls before tea to leave Sussex struggling on 188-7.

Steve Patterson was the only Yorkshire bowler to make a breakthrough during a frustrating opening session, striking with his first ball after replacing Tim Bresnan from the Park End when Chris Nash edged behind to give wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow the first of six catches.

Yorkshire were frustrated for a further 20 overs before Tim Bresnan made the breakthrough only three overs after lunch that began the collapse, with Rory Hamilton-Brown driving loosely outside off-stump and edging behind.

Joyce followed soon after, the second wicket in five balls for Bresnan, when he also edged behind pushing forward defensively, while Luke Wright also drove loosely at Jack Brooks and gave Bairstow another catch.

Matt Machan was the only exception during Sussex’s collapse, cutting Patterson straight to backward point, before Pyrah claimed a bonus wicket two balls before the tea interval to remove wicketkeeper Ben Brown.
