Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Nottinghamshire still in deficit with eight wickets left Nottinghamshire still in deficit with eight wickets left

Yorkshire reaped the rewards of beating the weather to put Nottinghamshire under pressure on the third day of their LV= County Championship match at Headingley.

Having had all but 9.3 overs washed out by rain on the third day, Yorkshire took advantage of a day’s bright sunshine to claim a narrow 42-run first innings lead and then reduced Nottinghamshire to 30-2 at tea.

They had resumed on 76-2, still trailing by 129 runs, and were indebted to two useful contributions of 45 from Australian batsman Aaron Finch and all-rounder Richard Pyrah, who was playing his first championship match for Yorkshire in almost a year.

Yorkshire began unsteadily, lost four for 45 in 11 overs and looked in serious danger of conceding a crucial first-innings deficit at 128-6, only for Finch and Tim Bresnan to share a 56-run seventh-wicket stand.

The momentum they gained from that stand and Pyrah’s later innings, who hit seven fours, helped them when Nottinghamshire began their reply, with Bresnan making the breakthrough in the seventh over when he won an lbw appeal against Alex Hales shouldering arms.

Former Yorkshire batsman Phil Jaques was beaten by Steve Patterson’s extra bounce from the Rugby Stand End and edged behind shortly before tea.
