Bradford Bulls’ rivals in no rush to help out injury-hit squad

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Bulls duo Tom Olbison and Adam O’Brien combine to halt St Helens opponent Luke Thompson Bulls duo Tom Olbison and Adam O’Brien combine to halt St Helens opponent Luke Thompson

Francis Cummins admits he is unlikely to add to his injury-hit squad ahead of the Magic Weekend showdown with Huddersfield at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday.

The Bulls coach was missing eight first-team players through injury during yesterday’s 50-0 hammering at the hands of St Helens after Luke Gale and Manase Manuokafoa were ruled out.

Gale had been suffering through sickness in the week and then felt his hamstring tighten up during training, while Manuokafoa remained sidelined with the same problem and was similarly not risked.

It remains to be seen whether they will be available to face the Giants and, while James Donaldson could return, on-loan Huddersfield prop Antonio Kaufusi is ineligible to face his parent club.

Chev Walker picked up a knock yesterday but, when asked about the prospect of bolstering his threadbare squad before the weekend, Cummins said: “Probably not because the situation is that the clubs who have got players are holding on to them.

“There are a few more clubs now getting dragged into it (relegation fight) and they’re getting very nervous, so there are not a lot of players out there. We’ll keep trying but it’s not easy.”

Saints scrum half Luke Walsh was the architect of his side’s victory with a stellar display.

But Cummins admitted: “We knew it was going to be tough and we had Galey and Nas pull out even after our last training session, so it did move us around.

“I must pay tribute to Luke George (after a rib injury) because we had Nathan Conroy as the only other fit player in the entire club. He put his hand up and came through okay.

“We started off well but just kept giving away cheap ball and you can’t afford to do that against Saints. We then went into a bit of freefall and it was always going to be difficult then.

“Mentally we were trying to come up with big plays when all we needed to do was stick to the process.

“You can’t afford not to kick out for penalties because it starts to become a training run for the opposition.”

Wakefield had edged eight points clear of the Bulls with their victory at Widnes on Friday night.

But Cummins said: “We’ve not focused on anything else. We’re trying not to even think about winning – we just need to keep the process of accumulating possession and doing what we’re doing.

“We can’t control anything outside our little bit. Wakefield will do what they do and if it’s not Wakefield we are chasing down then it will be someone else.

“We need to get back to what we had done in the past couple of weeks and be a bit more assured with what we’re doing.”

If we are to survive relegation we need to string 4 - 5 wins together & in all honesty I can not see that happening. If we were to get all six points back I still don’t think we are capable of avoiding relegation & the likelihood of getting six points back is slim think two at best .

The sad fact is no other club wants to help us so we are in deep trouble. I just can not see Fev or Halifax in super league though it just seems pointless dropping two clubs.

There is plenty of water still to flow under the bridge but after yesterdays performance it is unlikely we will survive on match points.

To be fair to the players they can not keep the intensity of the previous two games without squad rotation & with a squad so small there can be little competition for places or scope to rest players. Its going to be a long old season.

With Wakey winning on Friday the next home game is a massive one our only hope is to scour the NRL so we need the sanctions lifting asap.

After playing nearly everyone once the Bulls are where they are on merit.
Add back the 6 points and they are still a bottom 2 side with a vastly worse points difference to those above them.
Green though he won't admit it publicly is already planing for next season in the lower leagues hence why every new arrival is a loan rather than a permanent signing.
The fans have left in droves and those talking about staying up are kidding themselves. A full rebuild is required and Green is actually doing that on the quiet.

Abject performance unfortunately. Two restarts kicked out on the full, one touch not found from a penalty and poor passing leading to at least four knock-ons I counted. Our speed around the ruck is pedestrian compared to the better sides and without any big fellas we can barely get out of our own half when running up the middle of the pitch with the ball. Positives were Kear and Addy and whilst he had a bad game yesterday, I like the way Gaskell operates.

Perhaps a tad simplistic to say we only have six points and therefore are where we are on merit TVOR. We have been severely hamstrung by a number of externally imposed constraints, financial and player centred to name two, and therefore have achieved those six points whilst at a significant disadvantage.

Think after yesterdays performance it might be a start to think about passing let alone winning or even scoring. All we did was 5 drives then a kick-except when we coughed the ball up which was most of the time. (Except when we stood mesmorised by Walsh & Hohaia)

What clubs are getting dragged into the relegation fight? They all seem to be moving further away from the Bulls. Is Mr Cummins not reading the same league table as the rest of us? We need to win 5 MORE games than Wakefield from the last 15 matches and 6 and 7 MORE than those immediately above Wakefield. Again, all sides have injuries, it's part and parcel of this collision sport but all the squad should be capable of performing and that is your job Mr Cummins. I would think that Wakefield, Salford, KR and Catalan are quite content with the situation even more so after a 50-0 drubbing has severely affected our points difference (on top of the 84-6) meaning being level on points will be no good.

Like me they recall the tremendous matches between the bulls and the saints over the last decade or two, now we really shouldn't be on the same pitch as the top sides in S.L.I know we are down to the bear bones, but missing tackles, standing and watching the opposition just walk past to score just isn't good enough, the ( declining) fans who turn up to pay their hard earned money deserve better than this. If Mr Cummins thinks other sides are being dragged into the relegation battle then i am afraid hes clutching at straws, signs of a desperate situation which is beyond us now i feel

I've heard strong rumours that Wakefield are 'open to any offers' for players - maybe there is still some more twists and turns to come before the season is over. With regards only getting loan players what do you expect?! What player in his right mind would sign a permanent deal for a club that is looking down the barrel of playing the likes of Dewsbury and Keighley? By this logic the only calibre of player we are going to attract is second division quality players who are going to struggle to keep us up anyway. Getting players from the NRL is nothing short of a pipe dream, the only overseas players we have any chance of getting will be from the French league.

I'm afraid that for the most part we will have to play with the hand that we have been dealt with - if we had kep hold of Carvell, Sammutt and Scruton then we may have had a few aces up our sleeves but it just appears that we are destined for a short spell outside of the top flight to regroup.

The only solace I can take is that Widnes and Castleford have mixed it with the big guns on a regular basis this season, and this has been achieved by cutting their cloth accordingly and having the right people in place. I have no doubt that Cummins can take us to the heights of a decade ago, however I do feel he needs more support from quality individuals, I'm afriad St Hilaire is simply not good enough.

It's difficult to pick out positives after a display like yesterday's, and it's all too easy to throw nothing but negativity towards the club. But, there are people at this club who are really trying, who deserve a lot of credit but don't receive it because their efforts are overshadowed by results like this. 3 such people, who never ever get a mention or receive their due plaudits are Bullman, Bullboy and the new match announcer Alex Simmonds. I have been a season ticket holder for the last 3 seasons, been to almost every home game and some Challenge Cup ones too, and I love being at Odsal in the minutes leading up to kick off. Not just because of the antics that the 2 mascots get upto - which can do nothing but make you laugh, but also the enthusiasm and entertainment provided by the new announcer. Don't get me wrong, I liked Steve Bailey, but this guy is a breath of fresh air, he really gets into the spirit and gee's the fans up.

With regards to the new board, despite what people say, they are trying. We are still unable to sign overseas players, and as has been explained countless times, good quality recruits are simply not available. However they have had repairs done to the ground, overhauled the ticket office and megastore, and launched the new Bull Power utilities comparison venture. Whether Bull Power will provide any real income remains to be seen, but in my opinion it is a sign of the board trying to do something different, so give them their due.

The only people at the club lacking any enthusiasm are the players themselves. And don't confuse that with lack of effort - The effort is there, they are trying, but they just aren't matching that effort with desire and eagerness. Trundling back into line after a break, no eagerness to get scrums formed or to get up off the ground to play the ball quickly - we are missing out on loads of potential penalties for holding down simply because we don't try to get up off the ground quick enough and therefore the ref doesn't see an infringement by the opposition.

Come on Bulls, show the same enthusiasm as the guy who reads your name out to the fans!

We are doomed, we have had no investment in the Club since Green took over and that is beginning to tell in the players performance; for them nothing has changed.

We need to splash some cash; there are a number of Union players from a league background whose season has now finished. They are excluded from the salary cap (which we are way under anyway) lets get one of them in on a short term loan in an attempt to get us out of the mire.

Eastmond and Tomkins could be available.

I can see Wakey and Salford and some of the other clubs nearest to us winning another 4-5 games this season. That means we have at least 16-18 points to catch up – plus an extra result to make up for the negative points difference. That means if we lose next weekend we have 13 games to find about 17 points. Are we going to win 9 games out of 13 when the next time we meet Leeds, Saints and Wire it is at their place?

I am sorry to say that after 40 years of watching Northern in the top league it looks like I will be experiencing lower league rugby next year. I will be pi$$ed off initially but I will get over it and enjoy watching my club at Fev, Fax, Sheff, Leigh and the others.

Totally agree with TVOR. We probably are planning 90% for the championship and 10% staying up. Green obviously can’t say that and I understand that. It isn’t his fault. We have been a disgrace of a business for many years now. Every other business in this country that has been run as badly as we have has probably gone bust. I see it as a bonus / god-send that we will be given another chance in the championship to get ourselves sorted out and come again.
In Green and Ferres I believe they are the right people to help us do this and hopefully return one day with our heads held high and not be the laughing stock we have been for this last few years. It won’t be the end. It will be a new, clean start and nothing to be worried about that a couple of drinks won’t put right.
P.S. I also heard a few weeks ago that Wakey are back in serious financial trouble but will desperately try and hang on to get the extra money. Our only hope is that they can’t.

We must go back to basics and start again from next season with a total clearout. Unfortunately the kids coming through are learning a very, very harsh lesson, just hope we can get a couple of signings in soon to help them, going to magic weekend, might be in the bar when Bulls play ?

Got to admit she will have more speed than me.Got to have a laugh though,no use in crying over the situation. It has got to be a clear out and a clean sweep next season even though it is odds on we will be in the Championship.Got it on good authority though that Wakey are in serious financial strife once again.Hopefully the good times will return.Going for a nod now Axel, too hot for golf at my age.

Golf a good walk spoilt Spangles , Wakey are in a bit of strife but nothing major, Bulls next home game against them will be key, points deduction overturned or not.
