Holders Lightcliffe have been knocked out of the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup by the team they beat in last year’s final.

Hanging Heaton triumphed by 19 runs, with former Yorkshire player Ismail Dawood playing an important role in their success.

Dawood top-scored with 50, and with help from David Stiff (37) he helped his side to a score of 214.

Lightcliffe skipper Jonathan Wilson (55) and Alex Stead (38) fought hard but Lightcliffe finished on 195-6 and their brief cup reign was over.

Bradford League Division One leaders Farsley also fell at the first hurdle. They suffered a two-wicket defeat in a thrilling game at Pudsey St Lawrence.

Former Yorkshire batsman Joe Sayers made a fine unbeaten 100 for Farsley – his first century for the club – hitting two sixes and ten fours as they made 186-9.

St Lawrence skipper James Smith (45) and Matthew Duce (31) stabilised the innings after a shocking start before another clatter of wickets saw them plunge to 128-8.

The ninth-wicket pair of Jordan Thompson (31no) and Tom Hudson (19no) steered St Lawrence home though with an unbroken stand of 59. Ian Philliskirk was the pick of the Farsley bowlers with 4-36.

The day’s top batting and bowling performances were produced by East Bierley players in their side’s 138-run win at Gomersal.

Skipper Gavin Hamilton, the former Yorkshire and England all-rounder, made an unbeaten 152 which contained four sixes and 17 fours. He was joined in a sixth-wicket stand of 109 by Neil Gill (41) as East Bierley made 256-6.

Gomersal were never in the hunt and were dismissed for 118, spinner Kez Ahmed returning figures of 7-33.

Saltaire’s new captain Adrian Monk was the day’s third century maker. He made 100 not out as his side defeated previously unbeaten Hartshead Moor by six wickets.

Monk struck two sixes and 16 fours as he reached 100 not out off just 85 balls. He was joined in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 150 by Asif Ayub, who made 59 not out.

Morley defeated Yeadon by six-wickets in the third all Division One tie.

Yeadon’s batting woes surfaced again as they were bowled out for 136. Morley were guided to their target by their young left-hander James McNichol, who was 42 not out when victory was achieved.

Johannes Van Ee produced a determined all-round performance for Division Two side Brighouse but it was not enough to spare them from a six-wicket defeat against champions Cleckheaton.

Van Ee top-scored with 61 as Brighouse were dismissed for 130,  James Lee taking 3-32 and Andrew Deegan 3-47. Van Ee took 3-48 with the ball but couldn’t prevent Cleckheaton from cruising to their target. Richard Whitehurst led the way with an unbeaten 47.

Woodlands also overcame Division Two opposition, defeating Spen Victoria by five wickets at Albert Terrace.

Left-arm spinner Chris Brice took 4-15 as the visitors were dismissed for 98.

Woodlands didn’t have things all their own way as Robert Warriner followed up his five-wicket haul against Undercliffe on Saturday with 3-29, before Woodlands eased home.
