Will Bell has been given another chance to stake his claim for the fly half position as Wharfedale head for the south coast.

With Tom Barrett due to join Rotherham next season, Bell will be hoping to impress in Saturday’s SSE National League One clash at Worthing Raiders.

Bell caught the eye in last Saturday’s 44-15 Yorkshire Cup semi-final win over Hull Ionians.

Barrett was switched to full back to give Bell his chance and he remains in that position at Worthing.

Coach Jon Feeley said: “With our league position secure, we can have a look at a number of options for next season.

“We have two league games to play and a Yorkshire Cup final, so there are opportunities for players to show what they can do.”

He added: “Will Bell was one of a number of fringe players who came in and did a good job against Ionians.

“Matt Beesley, Tom Whyte, Tom Baines, Will Davidson, Robbie Davidson, Jack Ramshaw and Chris Howick can be also be pleased with their efforts.”

Wharfedale will be without the talismanic Rob Baldwin for the clash with relegated Worthing.

His wife gave birth to a baby daughter earlier this week, so he is not making the long trip to Sussex.

His place in the back row goes to Josh Burridge, who missed the win over Hull Ionians as he was taking part in a North of England under-20 training camp.

Winger Josh Prell, who was involved in the same session, also returns to the side on the wing in place of former England international Dan Scarbrough.

With Jake Armstrong injured and skipper Chris Steel named among the replacements as he continues to be dogged by an ankle problem, young prop Matt Beesley gets his chance.

The powerful Leeds Metropolitan University student impressed against Ionians and retains his place in an unchanged front row alongside Luke Cole and Adam Howard.

Feeley is expecting an open game. He said: “Worthing have scored a lot of tries but some times they have been a little naive in their attacking intentions and it is sad they are being relegated after just one year.

“We beat them on the first day of the season, but they showed then their potential to score tries and we have to make sure we approach this match correctly.”
