A Bradford BMX racing club has been awarded around £140,000 from British Gas to install a wind turbine to power floodlights at their track in Peel Park.

The Bradford Bandits BMX Racing Club had to pitch their idea against three other projects from Yorkshire.

Almost 100 projects from across the UK applied for the British Gas Green Streets initiative, where a total of £2m will be invested in community energy projects.

Bradford BMX Bandits’ Ian Thewlis said: “Our ambition is that it will help increase members but also benefit the whole community.

“We’re passionate about our club and about creating a sustainable way to expand.

“We’re absolutely stunned to have won.”

Jon Kimber, head of British Gas New Energy, who sat on the judging panel, said: “Bradford Bandits is providing a safe environment for local children and now this impressive community initiative can provide a sustainable environment too.”

Last month the Telegraph & Argus reported how the club had been shorlisted by the West Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board for Community Cashback funding of £25,000 for the turbine.

The club was among five West Yorkshire bids to be considered by the Office of Criminal Justice Reform for the scheme, which aims to put money from the proceeds of crime back into the community.
