SIR – Gerry Sutcliffe MP is half-right when he says there should be “strict penalty clauses” attached to the demolition of Bradford’s iconic Odeon building and its replacement by an anonymous glass eggbox. (He cites the example of the Westfield disaster, but surely there must have been such clauses in that case also?) Gerry ought to go the extra mile and support the call for a public referendum on the Odeon issue.
As a career politician who no doubt reads the letters in the T&A, surely he must realise that there are no votes in this act of vandalism.
I’m aware that the Labour segment of Bradford Council is very much a law unto itself, but as a former leader himself he could prevail on members to see reason on this issue, especially when disaster looms in the polls, nationally as well as locally.
