Compassion needed

SIR – Having read Paul Collins’s letter (T&A, February 12) in which he states children are more important than animals, I agree with him. However, this is not the argument put forward by Animal Aid and other animal welfare groups.

His pork probably comes from animals kept in appalling conditions. Also, about 80 per cent have their tails cut off despite regulation banning this, and also teeth chipping is practised.

A nation of animal lovers? Pigs and all food animals deserve better, and our compassion.
