SIR – Alan Hurst, of Buttershaw St Paul’s AODS, writes in the Telegraph & Argus (January 21) that there are only two societies playing at theatres in Bradford – his society and the Bradford Catholic Players putting on their shows at St George’s Hall and the Alhambra respectively.
However, the Bradford Players (another old established society) have been producing shows at the Bradford Playhouse, formerly the Priestley, since 1999, and in the past few years our pantomimes have proved to be extremely popular.
For 2009, we have two productions booked at this theatre – Boogie Nights, week commencing June 8, and Aladdin towards the end of November.
Coincidentally, Kathryn Tonks who is to play Mabel in Buttershaw’s Pirates Of Penzance, will take the role of Debs in Boogie Nights. So please, Mr Hurst, three groups remain at theatres in Bradford, not two.
Where I am in agreement with Mr Hurst is in his heartfelt plea to the people of Bradford to support local theatre groups. I also endorse his request to Bradford Council to reinstate on the agenda plans for the long awaited replacement for the sadly-missed Library Theatre.
In the meantime, the Bradford Players offer their good wishes to Buttershaw AODS for success in their forthcoming production.
Mrs Patricia Robinson, president, The Bradford Players, Hollingwood Lane, Bradford
