SIR - Re the possible scrapping of the 846 bus route (T&A, September 22), the government brought in the free fares so they should pay First Bus enough revenue to cover the number of passengers travelling free.

We did not ask for the concession. Most pensioners (myself included) were happy paying 35p.

There are lots of pensioners in the Horton Bank/Poplar Grove area who depend on the 846 to go to the post office in Wibsey after our local post office (Beldon Lane) closed last year.

Also there are two doctors' surgeries in Wibsey with many elderly patients from this area. It would be impossible for some of them to walk to the surgery.

The 846 is a lifeline to many people and I think all the councillors in the affected districts should do their utmost for people in their wards to prevent its withdrawal.
