SIR - The gospel according to Eric Daynes (T&A, May 10) seems to suggest that the power and the glory of our oppressive government may extend even into the hereafter: the very gates of Heaven will bear a "No Smoking" sign.

As a reward for virtue, the prospect of spending all eternity in a smokefree zone offers little incentive to many.

Looking on the bright side, if our government is in charge up there as well as down here, there is a good chance of early release on licence, to come out and sin some more.

Better yet, a suspended sentence would mean that we don't have to go at all.

Have you got a light, mate?
