SIR - Interesting that a regular contributor should mention a cartoonist's comparison of the fictional character Albert Steptoe to Jeremy Corbyn. In fact, I recall that the tight-fisted, miserable, rag and bone-dealing father in the 1960/1970s comedy sit-com was a Conservative. It was his son, 'Arold who was the Labour Party supporter!
Amongst other traits, the mean-minded, crusty old curmudgeon was noted for railing against the changes that were taking place in British society at that time, sometimes in verbal terms that wouldn't be allowed in contemporary TV comedy. Part of Harold's role, intended by writers Galton and Simpson, was to show the ridiculous laughable nature of some of these bigoted, out-of-date, imperialistic views.
Of course, Jeremy Corbyn is not noted for his sartorial elegance but it's doubtful if even he has such a moth-eaten 'cardi' in his wardrobe as the old man. But I do admit to being unaware if JC keeps a set of his false teeth in a jar, which goes missing from time time, sometimes for years!
