SIR - The fragmentation and under-funding of our public transport system is undermining the quality of life of many Shipley residents.

Saltaire’s rail commuters into Bradford are unhappy about the growing gaps in their services during the morning rush hour. They have also recently been forced to cram themselves aboard Northern trains arriving with too few carriages.

In the meantime, bus services for Higher Coach Road estate residents have been cut by half, on top of previous service reductions that we saw there and elsewhere in Shipley several years ago. These cuts compound the difficulty of changing between buses run by different companies, not to mention the fare increases that make bus travel in the UK ridiculously expensive.

Responsibility for this shambles rests with central government. The Conservatives have cut investment in our bus services by a fifth since 2010 and further cuts are on the way. Our rail and bus networks remain privatised and fragmented. The government should think again, and Transport Secretary Chris Grayling should resign.
