SIR - President Trump hailed his meeting with Kim Jong-un a success and most people will be hoping it was, in terms of being a starting point leading to the avoidance of a future nuclear conflagration involving the Korean peninsula and the USA. But, whilst pursuing that goal is most certainly worth doing, it was still painful to watch on TV the pictures of the North Korean leader being feted in front of the cameras. Thoughts of human rights abuses carried out in his name, can never be far away when seeing his image.

Reading the analysis in the press, the conclusions differed with a number of commentators unsure what exactly had been achieved, beyond giving the dictator a platform and publicity on the world stage. However, we must hope most of the real 'progress' will be going on beyond the glare of the cameras and that these two most unpredictable of leaders can eventually move things on towards a positive conclusion. Despite all the razzmatazz and photo opportunities, there's an awful lot riding on it.
