SIR - That so many members of the British Polio Fellowship have been recognised for the vital roles they play in the local community is a great source of pride for the charity and Pat Parker, the Secretary and Welfare Officer of our Hull Branch receiving a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this year is richly deserved.

Pat has dedicated her life to supporting and raising money for those who had Polio and now live with Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) and without her efforts, the lives of many people would have been diminished as a consequence.

As the charity prepares to mark its 80th anniversary, we need awareness of PPS more than ever. It is the activities of Pat, our other members and volunteers across the country that deliver this on the ground, as well as raising essential funds towards helping our most vulnerable members live independent lives for longer.

British Polio continues to support those who had Polio and the 120,000 in the UK who now live with PPS and need help to live independent lives. If you need our support or advice, call us now on 0800 043 1935 or visit britishpolio.org.uk
