SIR - The recent massacre of 60 Palestinians by Israeli military personnel (including snipers) was a disgraceful, horrific and shameful series of acts. At the same time it was very revealing. Clearly, the governments of Israel and the USA approved of what was done as various spokespeople from both countries made abundantly clear, one of them even in the UN building itself.
Yet from the United Nations and many other countries throughout the world, there has been unequivocal condemnation. Our country and some others, trapped between needing to say something appropriate and not wanting to offend two allies, weakly claimed what was done amounted to force which was not proportionate.
But, in addition to questioning what kind of leaders and countries justify such action, there is another vital question. Where is the leadership to come from that can take things towards the ‘two-state solution’ that many feel is the ONLY path to avoid never-ending bloodshed and war in the near and long term future. This goal now seems sadly further away than ever.
